On the way into the office complex I’m currently working at, I noticed two American flags flying here that are torn and frayed. As far as I see it, there is no excuse to fly a damaged American flag unless you are currently being shelled by British ships and are just keeping the flag up to prove a point to any poetic lawyer who might be observing the situation.
Fix your flags, people!
First.
I agree. I actually have never gotten around to flying a flag at my house because I worry about it getting messed up when I go out of town and offending someone.
By the way, Frank, did you complain to the building management? If they didn’t fix it quick, you could gather signatures on a petition, asking them to respect the flag and observe appropriate flag etiquette. They probably manage many other properties as well, and you could get their whole maintenance program into line on this.
My flag frays all the time due to the fact that it is impossible to mount a flag on a house without having the end whip around and hit something. It’s not falling apart, but the edge is definitely frayed. I would love to be able to afford to replace it all the time, but that is beyond my budget at the moment. Would you recommend that I fly the frayed flag I can afford, or fly no flag at all?
Let us not also forget the proper way to retire and fold the flag at sunset. Triangular fold with the blue field shohowing. I would love the mfg’s of the flag to ship the flag that way.
The Boy Scouts and American Legion in our town collect flags through out the year and have a dignified retirement ceremony each year. It is so well known in the region that they receive flags from all the small schools and city halls in the area.
Having an easy way to properly retire the flag has decreased the number of tattered flags in my part of the world.
Agreed if you can’t fly the Stars and Stripes proudly and with Her dignity intact, one should properly retire Her.
I would go with out a meal or two just to buy a new Flag when the old one gets frayed.
Also folks there is only ONE State flag that can be flown the same height as Old Glory……wondering are we? want to dispense with the agony of waiting…..its TEXAS!! yippe-yo-ki- ay….
Texas WK
Nope. No state flag is equal to the Stars and Stripes. The “texas” line is a myth…

Well doggone it, I started to rise up in righteous indignation, but decided to educate myself a tad……I’M WRONG AND ADMIT IT….all these years being lied to.
Apparently every State can hoist their flags to the same level….now the sequence in which they’re raised and lowered is the key.
Darn and here I thought Texas was special! Wait I can still think that!…ITS BIG!
WK, So is Alaska. Do you have a salient point? Heh.
