Saturday Night Open Thread

Last night’s Open Thread Post was a pretty generic post. Nothing more than “Hey, post something, won’t you?” I didn’t talk about anything, post a video, or anything. Well, Oppo didn’t like that.

Nope. Not gonna start until Basil free-associates a little.

Well, there was a good reason for that. I was driving. A pretty long drive at that.

I didn’t drive directly from Columbus. But I did start from about as far west as you can get in Columbus. I wasn’t quite spitting distance from the Chattahoochee River, but I could have rolled down the window and tossed a bottle into it. Really. And I had a stop or two to make along the way.

I mentioned to Oppo at the time that I was busy driving. I did that at the red light in Lumber City. Yes, THE red light. Because they have one. So, I didn’t get to explain much at the time, what with that single opportunity to stop after I got notice of his comment, and it being another 15-20 minutes until the next stop.

Some days are like that. More going on than hours in the day to properly deal with it all. So, last night, I didn’t have much to say prior to the request for your comments, jokes, links, and assorted nonsense. Like I’m about to do now.

It’s Saturday Night Open Thread. What do you want to talk about? The floor is yours.

Who wants to start?

  1. Speaking of songs (I’ll get there, be patient) the summer camp where I worked in high school and early college is closing down after this summer. I had a great friend on staff there that introduced me to a girl that I would eventually marry.

That place has so many great memories for me and it drives me crazy that it’s closing down. Probably to build a housing development. My oldest son was just hired to work there on its last year. He’s not too happy about the situation either since he’s been attending that camp since he was about 11 years old.

Anyway this song was playing on someone’s radio as I was leaving the staff area on my last day as a staffer.

    Flashbulb memory.

  2. Last night was full of it (“comments, jokes, links, and assorted nonsense”). I think I enjoy the overnight threads as much as anything else here. At least we’re not talking politics! (Nice story, Rihar.)

More poetry tonight? Last night was full of ants and boogers. I blame Oppo! Perhaps we need more appealing topics?

Oh – follow up: the ants are on the wane. 🙂

  3. Well, I don’t have time to stick around, but I do want to ask if anyone else has had more problems with spam lately. Since early February (the week before Valentine’s Day I’d say) I’ve been getting about 100 spam emails per day. It’s a hassle. It’s redundant and repetitive; I’ll get two copies of the same email within minutes of each other. It’s like I’m on the list twice or something. I did learn something; “cellular blinds” are a real thing. I don’t if that means “Jee Stream” is a real thing or not. There was one day when I thought it was going away. The quality of the spam got worse—the sender’s name was blank or the subject was blank or both. It was like the database it was reading had a blank record or something. And I think the next day I didn’t get any spam. The next right back at it. Now I’m getting spam from myself (ha, ha—with my username in the sender’s name). No it’s not the account I give here. It’s my primary personal account.

It’s annoying; particularly on my handheld, which doesn’t seem to be able to self-identify spam or I haven’t figured out how to turn that on yet, especially if I go a day and don’t delete it there, which I have to do manually.

Any similar observations—especially in regards to an increase in February? Any suggestions? I know it’s a long shot, but I thought I would ask. I’ll check back later.

    Ciao.

    • It sounds like one or more people in your email contacts has turned into a spam bot and probably doesn’t know it. Common problem. You might want to inform all your correspondents of the problem and see if they’ve experienced something similar (assuming some of them have at least some of the contacts you have).

  4. Someone was SO displeased with last night’s Overnight Thread, they gave it One Star!

I hope the One Start critic writes a critique here and converts it to words, It would probably make for some good reading.

  5. May 7 is the birthday of two major composers: Johannes Brahms (1833) and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840). Listen to some music by each of them today. For Brahms, who once called Tchaikovsky “an untalented bastard” (Tchaikovsky was neither; Brahms was just a curmudgeon), I’d recommend the Violin Concerto. The last movement in particular is wonderful, but it’s even more wonderful when you’ve listened to the first two movements, as well. For Tchaikovsky, I’d recommend one of the following:

Romeo and Juliet, which was made into the popular tune “Our Love”.
Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, whose second movement’s main theme was made into the popular tune “Moon Love”.
Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto (there is a second, but it’s not played very often), whose opening theme became “Tonight, We Love”.

All this happened a long time ago, when popular music was actually music (and, yes, I know about that thing that Eric Carmen did using the big tune from Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony).
