Monday Night Open Thread

I hated “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia” from the first time I heard it. There is just so much wrong with that song, I don’t know where to begin.

Now, to be fair, I never really blamed Vickie Lawrence for the song, even though she recorded it. Her husband wrote it, and he was a bit older than her — nine years older — so he was calling the shots. She was young and inexperienced in the music industry, and wasn’t really a singer, being a regular on the Carol Burnett Show.

Gosh, I hate that song.

Yeah, I’d rather watch her listen to Tim Conway’s Elephant Story.

  1. I knew of the song as a kid, but I was too young to understand the words. I liked the melody. I didn’t know Vicki Lawrence sung it even though I enjoyed watching The Carol Burnett Show. It was when Vicki Lawrence had a talk show she finally sung the song again to learn it was her song, and I was able to understand the words. A sad song indeed.

  2. “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

  3. PBA STATEMENT ON SOCIAL DISTANCING ENFORCEMENT
PBA President Patrick J. Lynch said:

“This situation is untenable: the NYPD needs to get cops out of the social distancing enforcement business altogether. The cowards who run this city have given us nothing but vague guidelines and mixed messages, leaving the cops on the street corners to fend for ourselves. Nobody has a right to interfere with a police action. But now that the inevitable backlash has arrived, they are once again throwing us under the bus.

Meanwhile, those same politicians are still watering down our laws, releasing real criminals and discouraging proactive enforcement of fare evasion and quality of life issues. As a result, our subways are in chaos and we have hero nurses getting mugged on their way to our hospitals. As the weather heats up and the pandemic continues to unravel our social fabric, police officers should be allowed to focus on our core public safety mission. If we don’t, the city will fall apart before our eyes

  4. I never knew she sang that song until tonight.
    I actually like it.
But then, I like songs that tell a story.
I also like short lyrics that tell a much longer story.
“So be a good boy, you’ll get a new toy, tell Grandma you fell off the swing” and
“If the dam bursts open many years too soon, and if there is no room upon the hill” are two that tell long, very sad stories.

  5. I agree with Basil (Basil?). I hated the song the first time I heard it. I never connected it with V.L. from the Carol Burnett show until now. Still don’t like the song. Never liked either of the other songs V suggested either, Although I liked most of the rest of Dark Side of the Moon. I really hate depressing song lyrics.
