They’ll Be Able To Remove Tags From Mattresses?

Martian 1776 has arrived, according to SpaceX. In a set of recently released documents, the company announced it has no intention of following laws from any government on Earth once it reaches Mars.

“For services provided on Mars, or in transit to Mars via Starship or other colonization spacecraft, the parties recognize Mars as a free planet and that no Earth-based government has authority or sovereignty over Martian activities,” the document reads.

  1. Someone’s been reading their Heinlein. I’d swear this was lifted right out of “The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.”

I’d be curious about the legal arguments to be made. I suspect we’d have to look back to the early days of colonization for precedents, and focus on those colonies set up in areas not already occupied by natives. But even in those cases, the colonists were subjects of a nation and going to places that the nation had already claimed, and were equipped with a Charter and other legal documents.

I think SpaceX intends to argue that they are doing something totally unprecedented. This is going to be fascinating to watch unfold.
