Straight Line of the Day: Countries That May (or Should) Change Their Name:

Turkey Changes Its Name To Türkiye to better Reflect Culture, Values
Travel Awaits | 2 January 2022 | Greg Robertson

The Middle Eastern country officially changed its name in December to Türkiye (when the English spelling is used). The decision was made to better reflect the culture and traditions of the country.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a circular in early December making the change to preserve the values that come from the deep-rooted history of the Turkish nation.

“The phrase Türkiye represents and expresses the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish nation in the best way,” the circular says. “In this context, the phrase ‘Made in Türkiye’ is now being used instead of ‘Made in Turkey’ on our export products, which are the pride of our country in international trade.”

The nation’s tourism group has already rebranded its website as goturkiye.com.

The circular said the change reflects thousands of years of experience. The English word means land of the Turks, and the phrase Türkiye dates back to the 14th century.

“Another valuable step has been taken to strengthen the Turkish brand,” the country’s director of communications, Fahrettin Altun, said of the name change.

The move is not a surprise since the Turkish Exporters Assembly began using Made in Türkiye on its labels starting in January 2020.

There may be another reason for the change. As TRT World points out, English searches for information about “Turkey” bring a plethora of results not associated with the country.

“Type ‘Turkey’ into Google, and you will get a muddled set of images, articles, and dictionary definitions that conflate the country with Meleagris — otherwise known as the turkey, a large bird native to North America — which is famous for being served on Christmas menus or Thanksgiving dinners.”

Looking it up in the dictionary, turkey will also get results that include “a stupid or silly person” or “something that fails badly.”

While not a common practice, name changes by countries are not as rare as imagined.

Most recently, the Netherlands dropped Holland as an alternate name in 2019. In 2018 Macedonia became North Macedonia, and in 2016 the Czech Republic announced a change to Czechia.

10 Firefighters Quit After Convicted Arsonist Is Appointed Acting Chief
The Police Tribune | 12/22/21

Ten out of 13 members of the Prairie Du Pont Volunteer Fire Department quit at a fire district board meeting on Monday night after a convicted arsonist was appointed acting fire chief.

The Prairie Du Pont Volunteer Fire Protection District Board of Trustees met in East Carondelet on Dec. 20 and fired Prairie Du Pont Volunteer Fire Chief John Rosencranz, KTVI reported.

The board gave no reason for the termination as they replaced Chief Rosencranz with Prairie Du Pont Volunteer Fire Assistant Chief Jerame Simmons, who was sitting at the same table.

In a statement released after the meeting on the fire department’s official Facebook page, the board of trustees simply said it had become apparent “over the last several months that a change in the Fire Department’s leadership is needed.”

But their choice to replace the popular Chief Rosencranz quickly became a huge problem.

Simmons is the son of Herb Simmons, the long-time director of the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency, KTVI reported.

But 20 years ago, he pleaded guilty to arson after setting fire to a vacant home and setting a small fire in Dupo High School.

Simmons was 18 when he set the fires, and he told KTVI that Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has since pardoned him.

But that’s not good enough for the firefighters on the department that he will be heading and some members of the community he will serve.

“It’s a pardon. Still, the town remembers the school being set on fire,” former Prairie Du Pont Volunteer Fire Captain Laura Rosencranz, who is also the wife of the now-former chief, told KTVI.

“The town remembers the house set on fire where we had firefighters fall and be injured,” Laura Rosencranz added.

A soon as the board appointed Simmons to acting chief, firefighters rose from their seats and began turning in gear right in the meeting room along with their resignations, FOX News reported.

By the time the meeting had ended, 10 of the 13 firefighters on the department had submitted their resignations.

Washington Bill Allows Authorities to ‘Involuntarily Detain’ Unvaccinated Families
SlayNews | January 9, 2022 | Frank Bergman

A new bill has been introduced in Washington state that authorizes a “strike force” with powers to “involuntary detain” unvaccinated Americans and their families.

The state’s Legislature is due to vote on the measure that allows the involuntary detainment of residents as young as 5 years old in “isolation” facilities.

The legislation, W 246-100-040, outlines “Procedures for isolation or quarantine.”

If passed, it will allow local health officers at “his or her sole discretion” to “issue an emergency detention order causing a person or group of persons to be immediately detained for purposes of isolation or quarantine.”

The measure also gives additional powers to health officers to deploy law enforcement officials to assist with the arrest of Washington residents who refuse to comply. …
