They do realize these guys all got guns, right? Even nineteenth century firearms technology can still kill you.
Oh, the reason for all those amputations in the Civil War? Not the lack of good medical care, but the size of the rifle balls, almost half an inch. If it hit a bone, the bone was just shattered. Plus the grape shot (buck shot scaled for cannons).
Fun fact I learned from reality TV—cannons are legal (yes working cannons) if they were manufactured before a certain date, I think its circa 1890.
