The Sound of Silencers

One of the first things I learned when I started using firearms was that Dirty Harry, unless he put in ear protection before each gun fight, would have been deaf by the end of the first sequel. Guns are loud; even a .22 handgun fired out doors will pop you ears. Up north of me in Cocoa, Florida, they used space age technology to make a shooting range quieter, but why go to such extremes? We already have something that makes gun’s quieter: silencers.

Silencers have such a bad connotation into today’s society, so much so that even more states ban them than ban fully automatics. When someone hears silencer, they think “evil assassin” (or, I guess by today’s lingo, “evil regime-changer”), but it’s just a logical thing to make guns quieter. Is there really a compelling reason that my neighbors have to get woken up every single I time I shoot an intruder? And no one gets angry at car manufacturers for making engines quieter even though I could easily stealthily kill someone with my Hyundai. Plus, if the idea is to keep people from using silencers for evil, then isn’t it a good idea not to make those people angry by forcing them to pay a $200 Class III weapons transfer fee? It’s just common sense.

  2. I would like to know where to obtain a silencer for hi-point s&w 40 cal. handgun. I’m sick of getting in my car after target practice and having the annoyance of ringing ears. I appreciate the crack of a gun but,after 50 rounds enough is enough.I would like obtain a legal silencer rather than the garage made slash home made as to professional manufactured silence because let’s face it ones better than the other,and more effiecent.I don’t need illegal ,and potention conviction facing concoctions when it’s my right and ability to do it and uphold the law.I’ve merely had trouble in my area and on the internet finding the silencer needed if any at all. thank you

  3. I agree with you about the noise and ringing ears.
    One doesn’t always have proper hearing protection at all times.
    What gets to me are these laws. Why is this country so bent on creating them to apply to the masses?
    If a silencer was used in an illeagle fashion, then I would think the weapon was as well. So the perpatrator using both could be considered committing a crime. Then punish him or her and be done with it, but don’t punish the rest of us with them as well. This is no different than at the work place. Nobody likes a rule created because one INDIVUAL casued some kind of issue so the company “covers it behind” so someone else doing the same can be disiplined. Ok so if you use a silencer in a crime you go to jail and that’s fine by me, but why do the rest of us have to pay for their crime it too?
    Dad (rest his soul) who was a police office for many years, taught me that what it means to be a man is to follow the law. Anyone can break it, that’s easy, but it takes a real man not to break the law.
    This country’s laws takes away from us, the indiviual, the chance to prove our manhood. Big brother, I had one too and we rarely seen eye to eye on anything, but at least we respected each other and didn’t force the others conviction down the others throat!

I agree with you all the way. with every good thing there is a bad thing, banning silencers would not stop any criminal from getting one, its the same thing with handguns someone that wants one that doesnt have a license is going to get one so why ban it if your banning it from the criminals in the first place? so why try to make silencers illegal.
    Things that we do Dayly can be made leathal by anyone.
    I want to buy a silencer for a m9 handgun, i dont know much about silencers so could you send me something having the prices of the most stealthy, super quiet silencers? PLEASE!!

    Only the government should have silencers? I suppose you also think that the Second Ammendment’s reference to a well regulated militia is a reference to a state’s national guard, and that private citizens have absolutely no constitutional right to own firearms.
    The Second Ammendment, in case you’ve forgotten:
    “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. ”
    The way I interpret “being necessary to the security of a free state” is meant to ensure that the public has weapons so that if our government is taken over by a tyrant we are able to fight back and wrest control of our government back. Well, obviously it is difficult to beat the U.S. Armed Forces by force, as we have proven over the past 227 years. That leaves only one way to wrest control of the government back, and that would be by removing the head(s) of government, without a direct military conflict. The only way to do this is through stealth, and silence is a necessary part of stealth. In turn, to make a firearm quiet you need a silencer. Therefore, to have a population that would have any semblence of hope of overthrowing a tyranical government would need silencers. Hence, my conclusion is that the right to have a silencer is upheld by my constitutional rights given to me under the second ammendment.

  12. Of course, the same argument could be used to say that private citizens have the right to own tanks and fully automatic machine guns. (Though I feel we do have a right to own fully automatic machine guns…) Obviously it would probably be a bad idea for a private citizen to drive to work in a fully operational Tiger tank, though it would add a little bit of excitement to everyone’s life.

This is the true essence of being a responsible gun owner. Guns dont have to be disturbing when they are fired. I’ve been trying to assemble a silencer for my colt m4 for a bout a year now, and until now i havent succeeded. I surfed the net and i’ve found books on how to make these things. the problem is i dont have a credit card and i cant afford those books. I’ve been searching for web pages where instructions on how to make these things are posted and available for everybody to read free of charge. Dont you think that would be a great idea? if the use of these things would spread, the possibility of it being accepted by the public would increase, and eventually, congress and other law making bodies around the world might see it in a different way and legalize it. maybe you can help me out, If you know how to make silencers, could you please e-mail me the procedures or step-by-step manual. thanks!

  16. I thought this page was going to tell me about how to make a silencer but it seems like it’s like all the rest of the sites. For you dumb f***s with the ringing ears; go get you a f*** set of muffs for your ears or try ear plugs, they work great. For the dumbasses who think silencers
    are dangerous in helping us kill someone in stealth, you guys are f***ed in the head. Anybody can kill in stealth. I can take a crossbow and do it easy but is cross bows illegal?? hell no!

  24. I believe the use of “silencers” should be further legalized. BTW: there’s no such thing as a silencer, only a suppresor – it is impossible to completely silence a weapon. As it is, to obtain a suppressor it takes a long f***ing time and a mountain of paperwork.   26. silencers are great for responsible citizens. folks where i live hate the sound of gunfires. i like target shooting in my backyard. i worked hard making my target area as safe as possible, but damn, cant use my gun bcoz of the noise. can someone help me make a home made silencer? pls send me the website for the insructions.

  27. Outlawing a silencer for s weapon is just like trying to disarm American citizens with constitutional amendments and saying its in our best intrest. There Logic is only criminals need guns to carry out criminal behavior. What disarming the public does is make us easy prey for both the criminal element and the government as they strip away more and more of our constitutional rights every day “In Our Best Intrest” of course.

  32. you can make a silencer out of pvc pipe. what you do is take a pvc pipe and cut it to about 8incheslong with 1 end to fit the gun and about a 1 inch hole in the other end. then fill the first half with steel wool, then cut a tennis ball in half and then put 4 in the pipe with steeel wool inbetween and this thing works like da shiznit try it!!!

    To all the people dying to know HOW to make a silincer….. ill tell you..

    This will work with most gun models and sizes… i only tested it on my .22

    The supplies you will need are metal piping… preperably stainless steel or just steel that will barely fit OVER your barrel(length depends on your gun), about 8 washers that will fit in the piping, a rod the same size of your barrel (fitting inside snug but not pushed in with force), accesibility to welding materials(MIG OxyAcetalyne, Arc, etc..), vice, and a hacksaw.

    the first thing you do is cut the pipe (vice and hacksaw) in about 1/2 in. sections, leaving 1 section about 3 inches,with the 1/2 in. sections weld 1 washer on the end of the pipe so the washer fits inside…

    now you check the washer hole size (if you dont do this and the washer hole is too small backfire or other shit can happen) place the rod inside the barrel, place the 1/2 pipe section with the waser attached on the rod, if there isnt much play (room) or it dosent fit, get a drill and drill them till they fit, keeping in mind to leave some room for the bullet..

    going back to the piping, weld the other 7 washers to the other 1/2 sections of piping..

    now you should have a total of 4 inches of the piping… weld these togeather so that the washer side is closer to the barrel(if you are a bad welder or splatter is in the way just grind that part off) After every weld check to make sure the rod is centered with the washers…

    now with the other 3 or 4 inches of piping weld this on the end of the silencer…. it should look like this
    and weld another pipe to the front (about 3 inches if mounted with tape or 1 in threated pipe in mounting with a washer thats welded to the barrel or 2 inches if welind it on the barrel)

    Once its all welded and u checked to make sure the washers are lined up and out of the way of the bullet… (u can grind off the welds and paint it) the last thing to do is mount it…

    There are many different ways of mounting it… using tape is a good one because u can remove it in that certian case (^_^) or u can weld it to the barrel or use threaded pipe and weld a washer to the barrel….

  49. I would like to say that the U.S has got it’s head on backwards. The use of supressores is commonplace in european countries that allow firearms, WHY?…Because it is considered impolite to NOT quiet your weapon …particularlly when at a range….everyone here knows what I mean ….your at the range and you are plinking w/22 pistol and some guy comes in with a 45/44/40 cal and you get hit with the concussion everytime they pull the trigger. I personally have 17 acres behind my house long ways but my neighboors are close on the sides….I can’t even take advantage of my own “personal” range, because it would cost couple of thousand to silence my different Calibers. particularly 9mm calico and ar-15, 10/22, 45, and 357 sig….

    The idea that other people should pay for the things you want (I refer to William Learson of Sept 4, 2003) is as liberal an idea as the United Nations, Ted Kennedy, and Hippies (and we all know how much we hate those three entities).

    Ever heard of Google? Ever heard of Yahoo? Maybe even Lycos? These are called “Search Engines”. To use them, you simply type in what you want to find (eg. “9mm supressor”) and hit ‘Enter’. Then a list of websites with information on 9mm supressors will appear, and you can choose from the one most applicable.

  55. Now I support our secound amendment rights to the end, but I must say that the only purpose that a surpressor can serve is as an expedient to some cluadestine purpose. If one needs a gun for personal protection and uses it thusly, there is no need for the sound or muzzle flash to be surpressed. The only reason that a private citizen could want a silencer for is to commit an illicit act. Our law inforcement has concluded (and in my oppinion rightfully so)that if you have a reason for not wanting to be seen or heard whilst carrying a fire-arm thn your probably doing someing illegal. Also, after hearing the kind of things posted by random idiots on this particular forum, can you really say that all citizens should be granted that power. As for the ringing in the ears that a gun’s report cuases, might I suggest ear plugs.

  58. Hey I live in new zealand and any idiot can go buy asilencer here for about $15 US… its great! I got a 10/22 and a marlin 25N silenced and its brilliant! I go out weekly and shoot rabbits and possums and silenced is fantastic. Before I could afford a silencer I used to use a piece of PVC pipe that slipped over the barrel, and drilled 1/4″ holes all over it. then i’d slip a 600ml coke bottle over it and cut a hole in the end of it to fit the pvc pipe. Then tape the whole thing together. It looks as messy as hell but it was cheap and very effective. I love my silenced guns! I live in a suburban area (1/4 acre) and snipe birds out the window. The neighbour has NO idea! The birds just fall down dead and it doesnt make enough noise to scare them! With the 10/22 you can pick them off one after the other. But now theres no birds on my street.

    search for SILENCER and save yourself some money. You need to download a free viewer to see the diagrams, but the patent will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the silencer for free.
    The uspto site is awesome. You can find out about military stuff you never dreamed of if you play around with your search keywords.

  63. How to make a Silencer
    Silencer is a term used back and forth with ‘suppressor. A firearm silencer would not just be the part that screws on the front of the barrel, rather it should also consist of a contraption to muffle the bolt action and ejection of the used cartridge. A suppressor is a device that quiets or completely eliminates the noise from the expelling bullet and gases.
    A suppressor works in the same way as a car muffler. The muffler consists of chambers for the compression to be dispersed and the sound to be redirected or absorbed. Heat is also reduced throughout the muffler system. A suppressor works on the same principle. There are generally three sections to a firearm suppressor; The first stage ususally consists of something that will absorb and dissipate heat rapidly. It also allows for part of the compression to be reduced due to the quick cooling of gases. The second usually consists of rubber or plastic washers or discs that help slow down the bullet to sub sonic speeds. It also helps reduce compression. The third and more complicated stage usually consists of tall wooden washers with rubber discs between them or thick chambers of soft plastic. The end of this stage has a low wear rubber cylinder to slow down outgoing air. The entire suppressor is contained within a one and a half inch 300 PSI (Pounds per Square Inch) plastic pvc pipe.
    Parts list
    1x 6-14inch 300psi plastic pvc pipe
    10-15x Rubber or medium hardness plastic discs
    11-16x Soft Wood washers with 1 1/4 inch ID
    1x Rubber cylinder
    5x Rubber discs
    6x tall wooden washers, plain
    2x steel plugs for the middle and front f the suppressor
    1x heat and pressure dispersement rod with positioning rings, black.
    2x stabilizer donuts to keep the suppressor straight, red.
    4x separator discs, green.
    1x Adapter to attach the suppressor to the firearm
    Discs can be cut out with a hole saw, purchased from any local hardware store. The materials can be bought there also. Rubber or plastic can be cut out of tires or trashcans. wooden washers can be cut out of particle board. The steel plugs can be bought at any automotive store as freeze plugs. The heat and pressure rod can be bought at any metal shop; buy at 4-6 inches long Aluminium tube at about 1/8 inch thick with an ID (Internal Diameter) as close to the bullet as possible. Stabilizer donuts can be cut out of birch or oak wood and then drilled with a hole drill. All discs and inserted materials except the head rod should be slightly under 1 1/2 inch diameter so that they will fill snugly in the tube.
    The heat rod should be drilled full of holes 1/4 inch from each end. These holes should be about the same size as the bullet. Leave about a quarter inch gap between each hole. Place a wooden donut at each end and wrap the rod in aluminium screen. Screw the rod into the wood or use epoxy. Place this part into the tube first, this should be very tight and could even have to be hammered into the tube, however do not use screws or glue to hammer it in place.
    Now place a steel plug in the tube so that the rounded end is facing the top or exit hole. Now place the adapter in the tube followed by the stabilizer donuts. Make sure the barrel will seat securely in the adapter and that the donuts are snug on the barrel. Make sure you place a separator disc between each stage. Drill little holes in the tube about halfway into the adapter and donuts and place small screws in place to hold them securely.
    Note that a small angle is cut into the adaptor to facilitate the sight of the gun. The adaptor has to be reamed at an angle so that the sight will not interfere.
    Place a smaller pvc pipe in the front end and push the heat dispersement chamber up to the separator disc, next to the adaptor.
    Now from the top, place a wooden washer then plastic disc, washer, disc etc. 9mm ammunition usually requires 12-15 and a 22 usually 6-9. There should be 12-15 discs and 13-16 wooden washers, do not end up with a washer, now place another separator in place.
    Last you will need to insert two rubber discs and a tall wooden washer, two discs then a washer. Now place another separator in place. Place the large rubber cylinder in place, this should be about 1/2 inch thick. Place the steel plug in place so that the rounded end is facing outwards and rivet it into the front carefully.
    Before using be sure there is a clean holw all the way. Use a wooden dowel to see if the suppressor is lined up with the barrel hole. All inserted parts should have a hole in the center that is comparable in size to the size of the bullet’s diameter.
    Things you should know;
    Suppressors will slow down the bullet and cause it to defract in another direction.
    Suppressors do not operate well in cold wheather but this one will for the first few hundred rounds.
    If you wish to shoot full auto you must double the quantity of internal parts and use an aluminium pipe covered with neoprene sleeve, remember that metal dings.
    Silencers could be illegal in some locations, be safe and know your silencer laws in your location.

    Be creative. Take a peice of pvc pipe that is 5 to 12 inches long that will fit snugly over the end of the barrel,(this will involve cutting a notch so that it will not interfere with the sights. put endcap on the end where the bullets will come out, and drill a large enough hole so the bullets can easily pass through without hitting something. The endcap(when drilled) should leave a small rim on the inside so that the sound absorbant “stuffing” that you will put in the silencer will not blow out every time you shoot. You must also drill a few holes along the top and bottom of the silencer for venting, or the air pressure from the shot will knock it off. About three holes in the top, and three holes in the bottom should work fine. Experiment with different “stuffings” such as cotton, part of a loosely packed sock, t-shirt, or pants. Be creative, anything that is not packed too tightly, and absorbs sound should work fine.
    !!!CAUTION!!!-MAKE SURE TO POKE A HOLE THROUGH THE STUFFING BIG ENOUGH FOR THE BULLET TO PASS THROUGH(LENGTHWISE) BEFORE YOU SHOOT WITH THE SILENCER, OR SERIOUS INJURY, AND GUN DAMAGE COULD OCCUR. !!!ALSO!!!- THE SILENCER WILL WORK MUCH BETTER IF YOU USE “SUBSONIC AMMUNITION” WHICH CAN BE PURCHASED AT ANY GUN STORE.
