Friday Night Open Thread: My Hope Is For The Future

My hope is for the future.

For that, you need kids who look fairly competent and responsible.

I saw one once. And my hope for the future is that I will see one again.

Of course, it’s an open thread . . .

  1. My hope for the future–

Mushroom clouds on the Sea of Tranquility.

The safe return of the Yak.

My shillelagh resting against my bedside, at the ready to turn the convex parts of a miscreant’s skull concave.

And, of course, world peace and a winning Powerball ticket.

  2. My pessimism about “the end of Woke” that we heard about the past few months is due to academia. The government bureaucracies being scourged by Trump were the left’s muscle, but academia has been the left’s brain for well over a century.

Pausing the federal grants will force universities to prioritize, but most of the self-proclaimed intelligentsia weren’t leftist because they got subsidies; the subsidies went to leftists because the people giving the subsidies wanted to be intelligentsia. To people of average discernment, that meant being leftist.

As long as employers can be liable for disparate outcomes, academia will have a stranglehold on credentials. Even if this is formally overturned, there’ll need to be actual means for teaching & training, and I don’t know how far along our replacements are coming. Plus, of course, there’s still a lot of “moderates” who are still enamored of the idea of a college degree.

  3. I think about myself as a kid/teen. I’m sure many struggled to see the competence and responsibility.
I turned out good. I’m doubt I’m alone here in hiding goodness in a cloak of jackassery. Of course, it is hard to look at my son and others his age, especially as he watches the dumbest stuff on youtube and think that hidden somewhere in there is a good work ethic and some intelligence, but looks have deceived before… So here’s hoping.
