Hey kids, ready for a test?

Hello everyone. No matches for today as we will be combining the matches for Wednesday and Friday into one start day on Friday, September 24th. We got 8 matches and then on to 4 and on to 2 and finally 1. Speaking of those 4-2-1 matches I want to use a slightly different voting format to help avoid ties.

We will be using not just stating a preference of one over the other but a strength preference as well. In the example below you will be asked to vote the preference for either Star Wars or Star Trek. Not only which do prefer but on a scale of 1 – 5 how much. Another thing with this poll is the results will be hidden until the end of the poll date. I want to get an honest result that isn’t influenced by the “current” score.

The poll will close next Tuesday, September 28th.

So please take the poll so I can see how well this works. I appreciate your assistance so I can make you experience more enjoyable.

Thank you.

This poll is no longer accepting votes

Which do you prefer and how strongly?

  1. Regarding the poll. As a test poll its fine but…
    1) No option to enter “How strong” on a scale of 1-5. (Or I did not see it)
    2) Should add titles … for instance, in Star Wars, is Movie 1 “A New Hope” or Movie 4 (I answered 4, but when I saw it, it was Movie 1)? In Star Trek are you talking about Series, Kirk movies, Picard movies, or Pine movies?

    • The “+5” etc. Is the strength part. If you strongly favor that would be “+5” and “+1” would be a slight favor.
This is just a test. The choices are 2 generic franchises, not specific parts of them.

      • If this was the intent, it was not clear to me. I imagined a bar with the 1-10 next to the poll. If it is possible for you to lay this out, I humbly suggest you do it like below:

        ( ) Star Wars ( ) 1 ( ) 2 ( ) 3 ( ) 4 ( ) 5
        ( ) Star Trek ( ) 1 ( ) 2 ( ) 3 ( ) 4 ( ) 5

(If you can do the first buttons, then it would ideally enable the second buttons to the right, if not, just start with the franchise with degree of like to the right).

And then, further, put a box around them to indicate they are one selection. This would also reduce the number of rows, which would make it easier for someone to mentally group the radio buttons as one item.

If you can’t put your radio buttons in a couple of rows (like that), then indent the buttons to let the person quickly know they are subservient to the concept above them.

I have worked in GUI user interfaces in a Unix platform for some time, so I may have my own “IMAO” going here.

  2. It would be very interesting if the winners and losers of each contest were determined by the strength vote average (or maybe that’s the intent?)
Would have been interesting in the Bo Derek vs Farah Fawcett match-up, or maybe not.
Definitely like the idea of the hidden poll numbers.
