Always Bet on Black

Did you know that coffee is the number one source of antioxidants? I don’t know what an antioxidant is, but apparently it’s good (and thus an oxidant is bad). So, all this time I’ve been drinking coffee, I’ve been extra super-smart.
I bet it’s even better for you when you drink it black like I do. Cream and sugar I bet take away the antioxidant power, or, in the least, make your coffee gay.
So, as an informal survey, what do you drink in the morning? Is it coffee (if so, how do you take it?), Mountain Dew, some other beverage, or are you a “I don’t need caffeine” weenie? Put your preference in the comments.

  1. Coffee, cream (or milk) but no sugar. None of those fru-fru flavored coffees either. I work with a bunch of Europeans, so I’m spoiled in that the office has an automatic espresso maker… so my morning coffee is STRONG.
    Charles.

  2. Pepsi. I can’t do coffee. My grandpa cured me of ever drinking coffee. He tried to get me to drink a cup when I was 7 or 8. He made coffee with 3 heaping tablespoons of folgers instant. Egad, it made me think seriously about redecorating grandma’s kitchen with a dark brown smelly liquid. If you can stomach the stuff, mo power to ya.

  3. I drink Coffee with breakfast. I also drink it with Brunch, Lunch, Dinner, and Supper. I understand that other cultures have other meals, like the British have tea time. I’m looking into embracing these cultures so I can have Coffee with those meals as well.
I drink it regular; guys who drink it black are just trying to prove something.
P.S. What is with southerners drinking Mountain Dew with breakfast? That’s gross. That’s the kind of thing that has the rest of the country thinking you are all a bunch of savages.

  4. Caramel mocha… it might have extra frills, but when you get two or three espressos in one of those things, its muc more effective at waking me up that just coffee.
Besides, the regular coffee on my campus is crap. They make it only at six in the morning, so if you get up at like ten, you have old, stale, bitter, reheated coffee. Blech!

  5. I drink coffee before work and before playing the drums. I like to spike my cream and sugar with just a hint of coffee, though. Anyone who says they didn’t have to force themselves to drink coffee for the first year because it tastes horrible is a LIAR.
God invented sugar and cream for a reason, people.
But when I really just want to drink something, nothing beats Pibb XTra.

  6. When I was a kid, I used to dump sugar into my coffee. As the years progrgessed, I used less and less. Now I drink it black most of the time, especially if I have something sweet on the side, (cinnamon roll, PopTarts, etc).
Much like Beer, you need to aquire a taste for straight black coffee, but if you still need training wheels, two heaping teaspoons of sugar, and perhaps some whitening agent of you’re choice is the best corse.

I hear this all the time. It’s retarded. If you don’t like something, why on earth do you force yourself to eat or drink it until you do? Is peer pressure that big an influence in your life?
Whatever. Give me my morning Coke. I actually like it. It has caffeine and sugar. Perfect.

  8. It varies for me. Most mornings, I drink coffee (dark and strong, sugar optional), but I’ve been known to substitute hot tea (as strong as I can make it; you know you’ve got it right when you’re thirstier after drinking it ;o)) or Mountain Dew (orange flavored is best!). In any case, caffeine is a must in the morning. :o)

  9. Usually an XL cup of Coke with my morning bagel. But when I’ve had less than my required 7 hours of sleep, I go with either coffee (Triple strength, double cream and at least triple sugar) or get a triple cappuchino (with triple sugar). Keeps me awake just long enough to get to lunch.
    Mmmmm, caffeine…

  10. Yes, I am an “I don’t need caffeine” weenie. I don’t drink coffee for religious reasons, although it always surprises me that the aroma of burned beans soaked in scalding water meant to be drunk on purpose is not quite as revolting as one would think.
So my morning beverage is usually water but sometimes milk.

  11. Mountain Dew. I work outside in the beautiful south Georgia sun all day and I don’t need anything hot to drink first thing in the morning, nor any other time of day! Oh, and if they don’t bring back the orange variety and can “Code Red”, I’m really gonna be pi**ed! Just like drug dealers, they get you hooked on something then take it away! Bastards!

  12. I drink coffee all day, black with 1/2 packet of Sweet’n Low per 12 oz cup. In an average day, I’ll drink 8-10 cups. I brew my coffee in an old (early 50’s) stainless steel vacuum pot.
I’ll usually have my last cup just before going to bed. No, it doesn’t affect my sleep, never has.

  13. Eight to ten cups of strong black java between 0600 and 1000 and whether or not I go to lunch another cup or two and depending on supper, perhaps coffee then as well. Coffee and Old Golds in the morning = “The Breakfast of Champions”!

  14. If you don’t like something, why on earth do you force yourself to eat or drink it until you do?
I hear this all the time, so here’s my beer story.
At college (of course) my roommate and I just finished a game of volleyball. As we were walking back to the dorm, we ran into another one of his friends that was headed to a bar and he invited us along. Not being very experienced with the bar scene, got the beverage that everyone one else had. TEH BEER!!
The first few sips were actully quite refreshing, but about half way through, I loathed the taste of it, could barely finish, and I changed over to rum/coke.
We went back out a next week, and I got the same thing. Why? The special was 24oz Corona or Yuenling for $2.50. Rum/coke costs 3.00, and they tasted good enough that i would drink 2-3 of them in the space it would take me to slowly sip one of those big brews. $9.00 in booze vs. $2.50 In short, reasons were purely economical, and I kept going to the bar in the first place to be social.
This went on for the duration of the semester. Each week, the drinking of the beer became less and less a chore. It got to the point where I could drink an entire one of them 24oz bottles without gagging. I started to like the bitter taste, like unsweetened Iced Tea.
One day, I was thirsty. But i didn’t want water. that didn’t seem to fit. Soda? Friut Juice? too sweet, but carbonation would be nice. but not too much. Then, like a ton of bricks, it hit me.
    I. Wanted. A. Beer.
Yeah, that would really hit the spot. So i found said beverage and lived happily ever after.
And that’s how I aquired the taste for beer. As for coffee, start with a whole bunch of sugar mixed in, and gradually wean yourself off of it.

  15. Yuk. If something smells that bad, why would I want to taste it?
I usually don’t get ANYTHING for the morning :gasp!: Maybe water. If I do get something, though, it must be sweet. Don’t care about caffene (doesn’t do a thing for me), but the SUGAR! Doughnuts and a Dew. Esp. Code Red (you can get the same orange taste from the orange “soda” at McDonalds). Can’t stand cola or wus drinks like Gatorade with doughnuts, and the wattery sugar (also known as Fanta/Fruitopia) is just too much to go with them. Even so, the Dew + Doughnuts still upsets my stomach.
But do I care? NO! Becuase I am a MAN!

  16. SonofJorel, Kneel before ZOD!!!
Taking potshots at the South for Mountain Dew drinking in the AM shows your ignorance and sadly judgemental nature. You must be a Yankee.
Mt. Dew is quite simply, the Nectar of the gods. (That’s why we Southerner’s appreciate it so.)
I like to get a 32oz worth at the Racetrac and add some of that energy drink to it. WOO HOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I am flying.
Now that I mention it, I am having a serious craving.
    Gotta go.

  17. I like my coffee like I like my women; bitter and loaded with whiskey.
Dr. E Scientist, I meant to write this yesterday,
That’s great. I’m stealing it and I probably won’t tell anybody you said it.
    Sorry.

  18. I take my coffee “gay”–not that there’s anything wrong with that. Two cups, in the morning. If I don’t get it in the morning, I’m OK until about 2pm–then watch out. Papa gets grumpy.
The best part about coffee, however, is the aroma offered after grinding your own beans. [And no–not those beans. Get your minds out of the gutter!] The coffee, while good, is nothing compared to the aroma of the freshly ground beans.
Mrs. Azlib, OTOH, is strictly a Diet Coke gal. We’ve been married 21 years now, and I learned looooong ago to not get in her way until she’s had a Diet Coke over a big glass of ice.

  20. Tea, Ice Tea
30 oz of boiling water, two tea bags in an insulated cup. Brew for 1-2 hours on the counter, place in frig overnight. Add ice in the morning. That will keep me awake until the 9 am Diet Mt Dew break. When I was in grad school trying to finish on time by working in the lab 18 hours a day (except on Sunday when I honored the sabbath by only doing a 14 hour day), I kept tea bags tucked in my mouth like chewing tobacco to continue caffiene extraction while working at the hood.
