IMAO Podcast Re-Release?

Reader Aaron recently emailed me in the desperate hope that I could dig up a particular episode of the IMAO Podcast (which you long-time readers might remember from circa 2005).

Well, after scouring my hard drive, it turned out that I still have most (and possibly all) of the IMAO podcasts.

It also turns out that – having completely forgotten what was in them – I was surprised to discover that there was actually some good stuff in there.

Thing is, I never realized it at the time, since I was way too close to the project. Being deeply involved in the writing & recording & editing & such, it’s hard to tell if something is funny when you’re on the inside.

From the outside… the answer appears to be “yes”.

So I was thinking about re-posting these things, but the problem is they tend to run about 16 Meg apiece, and IMAO doesn’t have that sort of bandwidth to burn.

And at this point, I turn it over to you, the internet-savvy readership. Is there any place on the internet that would host these for free?

Suggestions in the comments, please.

  1. I’m not sure either. But definitely worth-while as a project. Nothing’s come close to it since then. That was also the darkest year of my life, so frankly, knowing the podcast was coming out on the following Friday was often the only light I had. It was my one assurance that something that would make me happy would happen in the near future. And it always did. Simon’s little spin-off series was cute in it’s own weird way.
Only two regrets – the series didn’t go on longer, and Sarah never started the music career she richly deserved.

  2. Laurence has the right idea. Google Docs or Google Groups should work.

As for the podcasts themselves: They’re quite hilarious. I saved some on my drive and still listen to them sometimes. A re-release would be great! I bet there’s many newer readers out there unaware of the awesomeness that is the IMAO podcast.

  3. You could post the audio to YouTube and have only one or a series of pictures displayed. That would also be an easy way to link to them from other blogs. Harvey would know about that from recent experience. And for the ones who do not know, Laurence does a lot of podcasts and even adding his soothing voice to others when called upon.

  4. I can think of a few places. You could leave it on ddl sites like megaupload, or mediafire, or you could make a torrent and either put it up on a specific tracker or let it run off of openbittorrent.com, and DHT. The nice part about the ddl sites is that it’s mostly a fire and forget, you put them and then you don’t have to worry about them until someone complains that one file isn’t working, then you need to upload it again. The upside about the torrent is that as long as you have your client open, you know that every file is available, and once you get enough people seeding it, you only need to check it once in a while (or just leave the client open the entire time).

  5. Frank, er Harvey, er Basil could do NEW video podcasts with Princess Buttercup on his lap. Kind of like FDR’s fireside chats, but less liberal, more manly, with much more moon nuking.

Bring back the IMAO podcasts. We need more audio IMAO awesomeness.

  6. YouTube’s out. Podcasts are more than 10 minutes long.

Although I could break them up.

But there’d be no visuals for them, so it’d be really boring, and you can’t put YouTubes on an mp3 player.

I’ll look into Google Docs, but please, keep the suggestions coming.

  7. Rapidshare. You could be the first thing on there that isn’t porn. Not that I’ve ever looked at Rapidshare before, because I haven’t, and I really don’t know anything about that. Really.

  8. You might check out Podcast Alley.com or a similar hosting site that is free to users. Adding one each week or so would make it easy for us to make time to listen and be a handy place to put up more timely rants …… errrr commentary. Would also be a place to work on media skills and such, so could be used as a learning experience and a launching pad for world dominance.

  9. Hey Harvey, I’ve been pondering. Did you mean 200GB total, or 200GB/month? 200GB total would not be a problem. 200GB/month would push me close to my bandwidth limits but might be possible. If none of the alternatives above look promising, I could try hosting them and see what happens. Drop me a line if you wanna move it forward.

  10. You could do a staggered re-release (1 at a time). Cut down on bandwidth usage all at once and get an idea of traffic without going overboard right away. That way you’ll be able to see how thing go and if the #s don’t work out long run you can find another solution.
