What was the worst haircut you ever had?

I went in asking for a high & tight, and came out with a reverse mohawk.

AAAAAA!!!! Childhood trauma. When I was very young – first or second grade or so – every girl I thought was pretty, and every woman I thought was beautiful, had long hair. I told my Mom I wanted long hair and resisted all attempts to get it trimmed. Finally, my mother convinced me that the dry, split ends were ugly and a tiny bit of trimming at the ends would make my hair look thicker and nicer. My hair was well past my shoulders at this point. I heard my Mom tell the beautician to just trim the dead ends. She gave me a PIXIE CUT – shaved my neck and everything. I was desperately shy and would have died rather than talk to the beautician and try to make her stop. I cried a lot, but she thought that was funny and adorable. Mom was in the waiting area, nowhere close to where my hair was being butchered.

There was no gender fluidity in those days. Looking like a boy when you were a girl was very, very bad, and I had never seen a Pixie cut, which were brand-new at the time.

I did not have my hair cut again, by anyone, until I was 50 years old. By then, it was down to my butt – or some of it was. The ends were very uneven, as one might expect. I was a very distrustful and cynical child, but this was just one of many good reasons for the attitude. I am old enough now not to give a sh!t how my hair looks, so long as it is clean and neat, but this was very, very traumatizing for a shy little girl. Thanks for bringing it up.

Oy! oy oy! Condolences!

With the benefit of hindsight, my Holmesian deduction tells me that your mom assured you this visit was just to get the ends squared away — or “neatened up” — and even said so to the beautician in your presence to keep you docile, but first had had a private word with her. I have never heard of a beautician doing something so radically different from what the mom desired. They work on tips and reputation, and don’t invite grief like that nonchalantly.

  If so, it was a masterful charade. My mother ripped that beautician a new one when she saw what had been done. Mom wasn’t a good liar, I don’t think it was an act. The beautician just kept saying, “I know you’ll both love it when you get used to it.” I know the manager got involved, and Mom did not pay for the cut (again, I don’t think this was all staged for my benefit. Other customers were watching, I don’t think they’d have agreed to pretend to make such a mistake).
