I was fascinated by the game of chess before I learned how to play. Then, one day, I taught myself the rules. Well, mostly. I got them mostly right. But I eventually learned all the rules. And I’ve continued to love the game this whole time.

Try replacing some of the pawns with checkers. Symmetric replacements for each team; how many & which ones vary to taste.
Checkers move as in their own game: diagonally one space, only forward until they make it to the opponent’s end of the board, at which point you can move either direction.
They capture by jumping, just as in checkers; they can’t just move right into an opponent’s space & capture. Multiple jumps are allowed, if possible.
Other pieces capture them the same way those pieces capture normal chess pieces.
They’re less versatile than even pawns, since their promotion is so weak. But, they’re the only pieces on the board that can capture more than one piece in a single turn.
I used to play Backgammon with 12 die. Game over in about 3 rolls.
What really sucks is….
You work out a king-rook switch (casteling), and your opponent says “Hey! What are you doing?!”
I’m still not sure “en passant” wasn’t just made up on the spot by a veteran who just realized he’d made a mistake against a rookie.
I hate when I have to explain that to someone who thinks I’m cheating. I’ve given up using it a couple times.
Now, I make sure people know what that and castleing are before I start.
I played at one time but once you win, as in any game, why bother?
Chess can be beaten by cheating, as in any other game. Once you understand it then you have the choice as many do: play it and and let it subsume you like an idiot who is world of warcraft or any of them or you move on.
I moved on.
I beat the best in the world.
Why play again when you have him like a goldfish out of water.
