How Are Speed Limits Set?

Huh… I always thought they had engineers design the roads for a certain max speed, then posted the limit as 10mph lower as a safety cushion

  1. Speed limits are set using a complicated formula involving size of road (lanes,), type of area (rural, urban, etc], distance between cross streets/ highway exits and, of course, the most important factor: How much revenue they want to generate .
