Saturday Night Hootenanny

Good evening all. Well the regulars know Les finally got to the right answer.

But he cheated. That’s a no-no. So he will not receive an Oak Leaf for his efforts. Naughty, naughty boy.

Well I’m making this an easy one so it is a timed contest. If I don’t see a correct answer with a time stamp within 45 minutes of our 7:00 pm posting I am awarding myself a Ribbon. If no one gets it at all it will be a double win for me.

So get cracking. I’ll be watching the Derby and Jimmy Buffett whilst playing poker so consider me busy.

Also, just for giggles if you do guess it let us which song made it click for you. No cheating please.

On to the music.

Music Industry Demands Funding So They Can Stop Climate Change by Eliminating Live Tours
WattsUpWithThat.com | April 28, 2021 | Eric Worrall

Apparently, The Guardian (UK) ran a story to this effect:

One new idea – also announced this week, and affiliated with Brian Eno – is “Earth Percent,” which is aiming to raise $100m (ÂŁ72m) by 2030 from the industry itself to transition towards sustainability. The proposal is for artists, companies and individuals to commit a small percentage of their revenue to Earth Percent, which will redistribute the money to organisations working on the climate emergency, including those focused on the music industry, such as A Greener Festival, Music Declares Emergency and Julie’s Bicycle.

…

[A recent report on the dance music industry] argued that tours could be routed more efficiently, local scenes and artists could be better nurtured to reduce the pull of foreign superstars, and exclusivity clauses (where artists can’t play more than one show locally) could be challenged.

Relentless touring – driven by low income from streams and physical format sales – is precarious and environmentally unsustainable, so music is taking seriously the idea of green jobs and a “just transition” (a term coined by the global trade union movement to prioritise workers’ rights and reduce inequalities). In 2020, more than 800 artists and creative professionals endorsed a letter to Oliver Dowden calling for a “just and green” cultural recovery from Covid-19, including the demand that all government funding for the arts is aligned with national climate targets.

… in response to which Eric Worrall rightfully opines:

Of course, even the measures demanded by artists don’t go far enough. So long as artists are producing new music, there is a risk fans will be tempted to add to their carbon footprints by travelling to see them perform.

So what we really need is for the government to fund self identified artists to sit on their butts and not produce anything, thus completely eliminating the potential excess carbon footprint their product might otherwise create.

The cost of this government funding could be partly offset by punitive taxes on high income artists who defy industry association climate edicts by continuing to produce and perform.

This should add an extra savor to tonight’s Hootenanny; also known as “the good old days.”

Solar storm travelling at 1.8million km per hour to hit Earth
Express | Fri, Apr 30, 2021 | Sean Martin

Forecasters expect the stream to hit Earth on Sunday, May 2, and it could affect Earth’s satellite technology.

It has been categorised as a G1 class storm which can lead to “weak power grid fluctuations” and can have a “minor impact on satellite operations”.

Astronomer Tony Phillips wrote on his Space Weather site: “Minor G1-class geomagnetic storms are possible on May 2nd when a stream of solar wind is expected to hit Earth’s magnetic field.

While this solar storm is largely is insignificant…the Sun can also release solar flares so powerful that they can cripple Earth’s technology.

“The probability of an event of that size happening is estimated by the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering as one in 10 in any decade.”

The UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering then adjusted its glasses and spoke out against atomic wedgies.

Scientists Suck at Science

I’ve got no beef with their conclusions, just their methodology:

Study: Low fat diets reduce men’s testosterone levels
Medical Net News | 04/09/2021

A new study conducted at the University of Worcester and published in The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology has found low fat diets decrease men’s testosterone levels by 10-15%.

Optimal testosterone levels are critical to men’s health. Low testosterone levels are linked to a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. Healthy testosterone levels are also key for men’s athletic performance, mental health, and sexual health.

Since the 1970s, there has been a decrease in men’s average testosterone levels and rates of hypogonadism (medically low testosterone) have been increasing. Low risk dietary strategies could be a useful treatment for low testosterone.

The study was a systematic review and meta-analysis, which combined together the results of 6 well-controlled studies with a total of 206 participants. These studies first put men on a high fat diet (40% fat), and then transferred them to a low fat diet (20% fat), and found their testosterone levels decreased by 10-15% on average. Particularly bad were vegetarian low fat diets causing decreases in testosterone up to 26%.

Six studies. 206 participants. So about 34 participants per study.

17 people, per study, if each control group was equal to the number of participants.

This was done six times.
