Friday Night Open Thread: Bots in the Belfry

How has the computer age aided or hindered religion?

You can use search engines and search terms to locate biblical passages on any subject you’re looking for, rather than relying on the encyclopedic memory of ol’ Uncle Pete down the road. That’s got to be a positive.

On the other hand, Democrats will definitely put you on a terrorist watch list if you do.

  1. I can easily search for Biblical passages that apply to my current situation. My church also livestreams it’s sermons on YT, so I tend to watch about half of them there, whereas I would otherwise just miss them. I can also watch other sermons which I find helpful when my church isn’t on the topic I want to address. And without the sermons, I simply don’t get as much from just reading the Bible myself. I also enjoy reading about all the archeological discoveries that are related to religion.

  2. Yesterday I had a phone call with my wife, and I suggested she take a specific online class I had found. One dedicated to solving a problem she has struggled with for over 3 years and hasn’t made any progress on. She replied that “I’ll never do that, just because YOU suggested it”. Ten minutes later at work I listened to a presentation about the Titan submersible implosion. In it, they highlighted just how many people told the CEO what would happen, how to prevent it, they had warning systems etc. He fired those people, or quit working with those companies, or in the case of the warning system, simply ignored it when it warned him the hull was about to fail.

It’s infuriating watching people destroy themselves because they refused good advice simply because they are stubborn.
