Charles Dillon Stengel was born July 30, 1890, in Kansas City, Missouri. The fact that he was born there is the reason that he was nicknamed “KC”, which turned into “Casey”. He was a good-hitting outfielder (unfortunately, with a smaller-than-average range) for five different National League teams and a very successful manager of the New York Yankees, although a considerably less successful manager for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Boston Bees/Braves before he managed the Yankees and for the Mets after he managed the Yankees.
He is one of three people to have their number retired by the Yankees who never played for the Yankees.
