A lot of people mispronounce my name. They often say “BAY-zil” when it’s actually “BA-zil.” Short “a” not long “a.” Basil Rathbone, the actor who particularly famous for playing Sherlock Holmes, pronounced it the same as I do. Also, Tony Basil, actress, singer, choreographer, etc., also pronounces her state name (real name Antonia Christina Basilotta) the same way.
That’s one of the things I liked about her.
What’s been on your mind? Got something you’d like to share? A topic to discuss? It’s Thursday Night Open Thread.
Who wants to start?

We care how you pronounce your given name because…?
… you care about me.
I always think of how Mrs Fawlty says it “BASIL!”
That’s how I’m used to it.
I just pronounce it “Phred”, so much easier that way.
It’s pronounced “FNORD”.
Here’s a little something you don’t see every day in the lower 48. In fact you don’t even see in the part of Alaska where I live. This was taken on the on the Haul Road that is used by oil company workers in support of North Slope oil drilling…………..

Fun Fact, the muskox on the right is named Basil. (Baysil), the one on the left kept calling him Bah Zil.
That’s funny.
Yeah, Lewis Grizzard got all uppity about “correctly” pronouncing his name too and look at what happened to him.
That’s right, he guest starred on Designing Women.
So you just watch yourself pal.
So is it B(oz)il or B(as)il?
I remember when Ralph Fiennes complained about people mispronouncing his name and every one thought it was his last name that was being mispronounced.
I pronounce it like Carmen Miranda might pronounce “Brasil,” but with a silent “r.” Frequently without fruit on my head.
How do you roll a silent R?
That sounds like a rhetorical answer to “how do you make socialism work?”
Keep it theoretical.
