Lee DeForest, the inventor of the triode (amplifying vacuum tube), which made long-distance transmission of radio waves possible, was born August 26, 1873, in Council Bluffs, Iowa; he invented the triode in, of all places, Silicon Valley (there’s a California historical marker in Palo Alto, just south of downtown, commemorating it).
