The MSM has done an absolutely pathetic job of educating the general public about podcasts. To date, most podcast articles have judiciously avoided conservative podcasters like IMAO and heaped praise on the podcasts that are pornographic while never letting on that ANYONE WITH A COMPUTER AND SPEAKERS CAN LISTEN TO A PODCAST.
Let me give you some facts that the MSM won’t give you about podcasting:
- NONE of the IMAO Podcasters own an Apple iPod.
- NONE of the IMAO Podcasters own an Apple computer
- If your Windows or Linux or Mac computer has speakers, you can listen to the IMAO Podcast right now
- You can listen to the IMAO Podcast on ANY portable MP3 player (many of them selling for well under $100)
- You do not need a portable MP3 player to listen to the IMAO Podcast
I guess everyone at the New York Times uses an Apple Mac, can afford an overpriced iPod, and assumes the rest of us in the “fly-over states” use our computers exactly like they do.
No thanks…
Speaking of conservatives and podcasting, Rush Limbaugh has said he legitimized podcasting overnight because he makes his show available as a podcast… No, all he did was take the MP3 of his show that anyone with a paid subscription to his Rush 24/7 service gets as part of their subscription fee, had his staff strip out the music, and then call it a podcast.
Limbaugh charges people for his podcast. IMAO doesn’t.
You figure out who’s giving you, the fans, a better deal on podcasting.

This is AWESOME to know and aside from being !!FIRST!! byatches, I am very happy to know I can download the show to my PC….except for the fact that I am on dial-up and stuff like this usually takes 3-4 hours to download…but I’ll do it!!! I love this board THAT much.
Also Frank, CAFEPRESS is giving your t-shirt business a bad name, it’s been two weeks and they haven’t answered my email either.

I’m the only graphic artist I know who acknowledges that Macs profoundly suck.
Fine. change the name you hate it so much.
IMAO Audio Blog
nice ring to it, eh?
and…here’s some news for ya, if Windows users own 95% of the market, 80% of the mp3 players are iPods, are you telling me that all 25 million or so Mac users have an iPod, and only a few PC users have them?
oh, and Grimm, it’s a poor musician who blames his instrument.
I hate Apple iPods. I made the mistake of buying one. I never got it to work. I traded it in for a reliable, lower priced competitor. I’ve yet to have a problem. And who are the morons that think you have to have an Apple iPod to get the podcast. I do agree, however, that a name change could be in order. I suggest Audiocast. As far as dial up use goes, set it to download when you go to bed. Worked for me before I got cable.
According to market research analyst Stephanie Guza from In-Stat, the market share of the Apple iPod was slightly above 30 percent in H1 2005.
In the 28 million-unit market for MP3 players, a 30 percent share means there are a little more than 8 million iPods.
It’s most likely that the majority of MP3 players owned are the small, inexpensive flash memory-based MP3 players rather than Apple iPods.
Podcasting is the name of this medium. No one can change it. It is Coke, Kleenex, and Xerox.
However, it would be nice if Mac users and the MSM would clue the world in to the fact that podcasts are not only for a narrow sliver of the overall pie.
I agree with the sentiment, but to be fair to Limbaugh… he didn’t actually have an mp3 available before it was streamed.
And, to be more fair, he supposedly has some cool software that will automatically download the podcast of his show every day as soon as its available for all of the computer illiterate people out there.
So while he didn’t necessarily legitimize it, he certainly has taken it to a level above and beyond what most “big media” types have, IMO.
I don’t own an iPod as the $(#*&$ing things cost so much.
I got myself one of those old Rio S10 64M flash players and stuck in a 512M card, so I can put my music and the IMAO Podcast on it.
Of course, when I listen to the podcast on the subway, people think I’ve suddenly gone batty when I laugh so hard I cramp up and cry.
Ah, well. If they had senses of humor, they would be listening to IMAO and laughing with me.
Then you, Citizen Grimm, are the smartest graphic artist around. Probably the most productive, too. 🙂
Main problem with podcasts… is the name.
It associates them with the mp3 players.
Why didn’t they just call the freakin’ thing an audiocast, which is what it is?
just posting to say that the figures that Scott posted were more accurate than my October 2004 figures. I’m ok with being corrected when I’m wrong.
what I can’t stand, however, is random grandstanding. saying “Macs suck” doesn’t really make me think you are a person of any intellectual capacity. but that’s not the argument here. we could go on for days on the merits and deficiencies of Apple and it’s products.
what I would like to know is what led to complaining about “overpriced” Apple iPods and Mac users in general. is it our fault that people can’t select “Save” from the File menu? I’m trying to find out how you assigned blame to a group of people that make up such a small portion of the audience.
//As far as dial up use goes, set it to download when you go to bed. Worked for me before I got cable.//
And when the Somalies down the hall catch wind of my telling their women to rebel and they come after me with machetes in the middle of the night, how will I call 911 when my PC is downloading a podcast. Sorry, I don’t have a hand gun in my bedside table drawer; I live in Minnesota (BLEAH!)

We must be the two lone iPod users on this ever increasing iPod hostile website, macstanbury.
It’s funny how the IMAO staff complains about misinformation regarding podcasts and their link to iPods, yet if you go to imaopodcast.com, what do you see? An iPod! Why not use a picture of a generic MP3 player? Maybe educating the public about podcasts should start at the homebase, eh?
I also agree that people who go around spouting “Macs suck” are generally intellectually inept. They can’t explain why they suck, they just know that “Macs suck” and “they are expensive”. Sometimes things DO cost more, but you get what you pay for.
Scott’s data is somewhat wrong as well. Apple sold 6 million iPods, just in their last quarter alone (http://news.com.com/Apple+earnings+top+estimates/2100-1045_3-5787132.html). The iPod is available in a “small, inexpensive flash memory-based” form as well.
I don’t see the point of attacking imao podcast subscribers who choose to use an iPod.
