Video: How to Make a Man Out of a Liberal Arts Major

[High Praise! to Theo Spark]

The premise of this short documentary is sorta like Dirty Jobs, following around a bunch of guys doing a hard job that they love.

The pleasure of watching this video comes in seeing the light slowly come on in the film-geek documentarian’s head of why a man would love a hard job.

It’s like watching a baby take his first steps.

  1. Having witnessed the start of a forest fire in the Cascade foothills as 16 year-old – and having helped fight it for about four hours as a volunteer – I can tell you what they do will kick even the best triathlete’s butt.

And, yeah, the State of Washington’s got a big fire problem right now. Smoke even on the west side, 24/7.

  2. That was wonderful! There’s hope (real hope) for that kid yet. I detected no disdain in his voice for those around him, which just might have been a life-changing thing. A hard job well done.

Do it again several hundred times and then make a sequel! Not only will YOU be better, so will the film because you’ll have the knowledge and experience to shoot valuable footage that currently you probably can’t even imagine.

  3. Not sure how much he’s changed. Pretty sure that bluegrass score is meant to demean the firefighters as “hillbillies” or “hicks”. Kid’s still been taught all his life that manual labor if for stupid people.
