Navy Lasers and the Great Debate

So the Navy has a new laser which it used to shoot a drone out of the sky.

Of course, this leads to the contentious debate: When we genetically resurrect dinosaurs for use in the military, should we consider putting lasers on them instead of rocket launchers?

Now, you know I’ve always been pro-rocket launchers on dinosaurs. Rocket launchers blow things up; it seems like the obvious addition to the natural strengths of the dinosaur. But others say it should be lasers. Lasers are high tech, and that compliments the high tech nature of genetically resurrected dinosaurs. Still, I think the explosions of rocket launchers are cooler and I’m just not as impressed by lasers unless they actually make the “Pew! Pew!” sound like in the movies.

What say you?

  1. I reject completely your false choice. Dinosaurs are surely large enough for both a laser and a rocket launcher. Ideally also a grenade launcher for handing targets that are not line-of-sight, and a couple of .50 cal for point defense.

  2. It doesn’t take a quiz kid to figure out the answer to this one: both! Of course you have to factor in the size differential of the various dinosaurs before you know how much of what ordinance and what kind of laser wattage that it’s possible to mount. I figure that the Pterodactyls will probably be loaded with smaller antipersonnel lasers and perhaps a pair of missiles under each wing, while your heavier dinos will be packing everything but the kitchen sink. They could perhaps even mount rail-guns on the biggest lizards. Lockheed Martin has been working on a powered exo-skeleton that if sized up could allow these dinos to carry armor as well.

  3. “Of course, this leads to the contentious debate: When we genetically resurrect dinosaurs for use in the military, should we consider putting lasers on them instead of rocket launchers? ” Abso-freaken-lutely. I personally want one as well. I can put in the turret I plan to build on top of my house. I also want them to develop a phaser, I want one of those as well.

  4. I think we should stick with the original plan of having rocket launchers on the dinosaurs and let the Navy attach the frickin’ laser beams to the heads of sharks.

Since the prototype will be built at an abandoned Pennsylvania Navy base, I have decided to call it “The Philadelphia Experiment”.

  5. Lightning Guns. Powered by the dinosaurs, with generators attached to their feet so that each step generates like a million volts.

Nothing like the crack of thunder and a blinding flash of lightning – racing to the target, culminating in a thunderous explosion of a billion, trillion sparks as it consumes anything in its path. : ) (I love the smell of ozone in the morning.)

    That or rockets.
