Thursday Night Open Thread

I only ever bought a couple of Van Halen records — don’t remember if they were vinyl, cassette, or CD — but did listen when the band came on the radio.

Yeah, a talented band featuring a talented guitarist. Just not one that I went out of my way to spend my few dollars on. Well, a lot of my few dollars, anyway.

  1. My brother and his friend brought home a couple of Van Halen LPs one day. I was probably in middle school. I asked them why the edges of the album covers were burnt.

They said they found them in a burnt out strip club they went to explore. Over the years This led me to a few questions:

Was it an accident or was it arson that burned this club that opened right next to suburbia?

If it was arson then was it done by a “concerned citizen” or by the owner looking for some insurance money?

Why wasn’t I invited to explore something as cool as a burned out strip club?!?!

If it was arson, did my brother and his friend contaminate a crime scene?

  2. I always found the story of why David Lee Roth got kicked out of the band amusing.

Among many things, the main reason was while Eddie was a severe alcoholic, David is a tee-tottler – no drugs or alcohol. He is also a health nut and an early bird.

So after shows when then toured, Eddie would be out drinking and drugging until 4 or 5 AM. David would start pounding on his door at 6 AM to go exercise. Every day.

  3. I saw Sammy Hagar open for Boston way back in the day. At that time all anyone knew about him was that he was the singer on the Montose album. He put on a great show. Boston was rather a let down after Sammy.

I also saw Sammy Hagar and Eddie Van Halen in their first performance together at the first Farm Aid show. That was quite a day.
