Saturday Night Hootenanny

Good evening folks. Hope you enjoyed Emu’s selections the previous week. There is a link for all the songs this week so get your thinking caps on and perhaps you too can become a member of the Order of the Golden Emu.

To the music, STAT!

  1. Ooh! Ooh! I know! All written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the duo who penned every single song in the 1950s and most songs from the 1960s.

I’ve had a near brush with fame/notoriety involving them. I heard a song that Vince Vance and the Valiants put out during the Iraq War, “Bomb Iraq,” to the tune of a song written by Leiber & Stoller, “Yakety Yak.” I made a cartoon animation of Bomb Iraq, and wanted to post it. So, I wrote to Mr. Vance (Andy Stone), and asked him if I could. He loved it, gave the go-ahead. I posted it on my site, got nearly half a million views (this was before YouTube). Didn’t know how to make money with ads, and had to pay a crapload to my ISP. A few months later, I got an email from the attorneys for Leiber & Stoller, asking if I’d heard from Vince Vance, because they had ordered him to take down the video and song because it was their intellectual property, and didn’t appreciate it. No, I hadn’t heard from him. I explained the situation, got a little testy with the attorney, who essentially told me, “Stop calling it a parody!” (parodies are protected under fair use) Anyway, I complied. So the video now rests on my hard drive.
