    • “Fortunately, I didn’t get married.” One assumes you broke it off – what sort of cretinous, boneheaded, imbecilic, lack-witted, self-destructive fool would turn down the chance to spend every day striving to improve the life of Iowa Jim? Although if I’m honest, American women are addicted to poor choices.

    • And here’s exactly how it happened:

On this particular morning, his intended had lugged Iowa Jim round to his aunt’s for lunch, and he was just saying “Death, where is thy sting?” when he realized that the worst was yet to come.
“Iowa Jim,” she said, suddenly, as if she had just remembered it, “what is the name of that Woodhouse series of yours — the one with the valet?”
      “Eh? Oh, Wooster and Jeeves.
“I think it’s a bad influence for you,” she said. “When we are married you must get rid of Wooster and Jeeves.”
It was at this point that Iowa Jim jerked the spoon and sent six of the best and crispest sailing onto the sideboard, with the butler gamboling after them like a dignified old retriever.
“Get rid of Wooster and Jeeves!” he gasped.
      “Yes. I don’t like them.”
“I don’t like them,” said his aunt.
“But I can’t. I mean — why, I couldn’t carry on for a day without Wooster and Jeeves.”
“You will have to,” said his intended. “I don’t like them at all.”
“I don’t like them at all,” said his aunt. “I never did.”
Ghastly, what? Iowa Jim always had the idea that marriage was a bit of a wash-out, but had never dreamed that it demanded such frightful sacrifices from a fellow. He passed the rest of the meal in a sort of stupor.
