Ah, Jimmy? President Eisenhower initiated “Operation Wetback”, wherein the Feds started rounding up and deporting illegal aliens. Once the illegals decided Eisenhower was serious, they started self-deporting. But, since Eisenhower, you are right. Although, the Dems told President Reagan if he would sign legislation granting amnesty to the illegal aliens in country then, then Congress would allocate funds to close the border. The Dems lied.
This country is incompetent. Neither party has tried to stop illegal immigration since when it became significant: in the 50’s.
