May You Live in Interesting Times

I was busy last night, so I DVR’d the election results. Please don’t spoil what happened.

Seriously, though, this is kinda crazy. I mean for me, I just became unemployed this week and now Trump is going to be president, so I’m in a weird place right now (BTW, if you have some leads for a tech job in the Austin area, hit me up). And it’s going to take a while for everyone to parse through this. It seemed like the Republican Party was dead, and now it’s in charge of everything and the Democrats are impotent and reeling. Now the Dems are the one’s that are going to have to do some soul-searching if they want to be relevant, and a lot of that is how all their identity politics finally came home to roost.

And still there’s the big unknown of what exactly is a Trump presidency going to be like? No one knows. Maybe even Trump doesn’t know.

Furthermore, as a classical liberal who wants smaller government, I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be doing right now. I’m enjoying the Democrats’ huge loss, but I’m not sure how the Republican win gets me any closer to what I want. We’ll see, though. Uncharted territory. No one knows what will happen.

Well, everyone thought the election of Barrack Obama was going to be great for race relations, but things only got worse during his presidency. Everyone assumes Trump is going to be horrible for race relations, so maybe… just being hopeful here. We’re a big country and at some point we all have to learn to work together. And that means no large group having all their concerns dismissed. The left especially needs to learn that.

  1. Sorry about the job, Frank. As a fellow Texas tech guy who’s been in your position there’s several things I can tell you.

    1) enjoy, as much as you possibly can under the circumstances, the time you have with your family. The time I spent with my wife when i was unemployed has been some of the most valuable time for our relationship.

    2) you’re in Texas. There’s tech jobs. You won’t be unemployed for long. Unfortunately, most of those jobs are going to be in DFW and Houston but even with the oil slump, there’s a lot of work out there. I get more emails from recruiters than from Nigerian princes…and if you find yourself in Houston, look me up.

    3) don’t give up on the writing. I’m a tech guy but also a life-long photographer…and I still manage to do both and get published all the time. In fact, not relying on my photography for income makes is much more enjoyable for me. I don’t think I’d enjoy it as much if it were a job.

As far as the election goes, I’m trying to remain cautiously optimistic. At least the door didn’t get slammed in our faces. There’s still a chance that this will turn out well. At least more well than it otherwise would have. I’m about as happy as one can be about an election outcome where I didn’t have a candidate in the race, if for no other reason than to watch liberals not get what they want. One of the great joys in life.

  2. Well.. I’m a Sys. Admin for a large call center company based in Ohio… we’re looking to open an office in Austin, and we’ll be hiring System Analysts, Developers etc… not to mention the “on the phone” non- IT Healthcare support call center work the company actually does. Not sure on time frame though unfortunately! If things change I’ll let you know!

    …On the Election front…

I’m so sick of the feigned terror we’re seeing from the left.. People can only take being called racist and bigots for so long before they go out and vote. Wanting a secure border and real LEGAL immigration doesn’t make one racist. Believing it’s better to give someone a job over welfare doesn’t mean they hate the poor, wanting to reduce the size of government doesn’t mean we support anarchy, wanting to provide incentive for business to hire and grow instead of raising minimum wage which just raises cost of living doesn’t mean we don’t want people to make more money…. People have been told these same things by democrats for generations… yet places where they are in power for generations like Detroit and Chicago are failing miserably. Trump was BY FAR the most liberal republican that ran for the office anyway… He says things Libs don’t like, and They’ve been told and literally conditioned by the democrats for years to only pay attention to what people say, not what they do. It think over the next four years you’ll start to see the benefit of having someone in the top elected position utilizing actual real world leadership experience, putting top minds in the right positions instead of giving political favors, and prioritizing improving the country instead of political gain. It’s the first time a non political establishment real world business leader has been president… it’ll be refreshing to hear real talk instead of the normal BS that comes out of politicians mouths for once.

Reminded me of this excellent writing:

      ——

“After being blasted as haters by Clinton’s hate-filled minions, after being slapped down as racial “cowards” by Clintonite holdover Eric Holder, after being lambasted as “xenophobes” and “nativists” by immigration expansionists in both parties, after enduring a string of faked hate crimes blamed on conservatives, after ceaseless accusations of “Islamophobia” in the wake of jihad attacks on American soil, after baseless accusations of “homophobia” for protesting the government’s gay wedding cake coercion, and after mourning a growing list of police officers ambushed and targeted by violent thugs seeking racial vengeance, an undeniable movement of citizens in the 2016 election cycle decided to push back. ”

  3. Good post Frank. Even as a diehard Trump supporter, I agree that we are in uncharted territory. Nobody knows exactly what is going to happen over the next 4 years.

Sorry to hear you’ve lost your job. As someone that has been facing the inevitability of being laid off for a couple years now, I feel your pain. I know it’s coming for me too…they’re just really dragging it out.

Good luck with the job hunting. And if that doesn’t pan out, write some more books!
