I watched Lilies of the Field yesterday (handyman roped into building a chapel for poor nuns). At one point, handyman Homer Smith (Sidney Poitier) compares the autocratic Mother Superior (Lilia Skala) to Hitler. The nuns (who are refugees from Germany) recoil as if they had been struck, and the expression on Smith’s face shows very clearly that he knows he has gone too far (no wonder SP won an Oscar, he was magnificent in this role). Comparisons to Hitler used to be reserved for the most extreme situations, not bandied about as a synonym for “Republican.”
