Having finished “The 25 most popular icebreaker questions based on four years of data” and enjoyed the results, I’m moving on to a new list:
76 Fun Icebreaker Questions (Not all of which will be used, since some are either/or questions, which are boring.)
Your mission: answer the question in the comments with a good story.
If you don’t have a good story, you are encouraged to make one up.
Have you ever won a trophy or medal?
Ribbons, mostly
True story Bros….the only trophy I have ever won was when I was 12 in Punt, Pass & Kick..and I’m 62 now. lololol
I have a plaque that says I was the second best junior bowler in the state of California over 9 games in Fresno at the state tournament…I donated all the rest to our junior bowling program back in the day
Curious here…I recognized the American Defense ribbon and the Armed Forces Expeditionary ribbon, what are the rest??
I’d have to check my service record, but I know there’s a Sea Service ribbon and one for Good Conduct.
Not sure about the other three off the top of my head…
Navy E Ribbon Eligibility Requirements. The Navy E Ribbon denotes permanent duty on ships or in squadrons that won Battle Efficiency competitions after 1 July 1974
That’s the blue one with the E
Ah! Navy ribbons no wonder I couldn’t figure out what they were. My ribbons were all earned while I was in the Air Force and, like yours, most of mine are unique to my particular branch of service. However the two we have in common are the same for all the services. Like you I also have two ribbons on my cluster that I can no longer recall what they were awarded for. Oh well they must have been for something I did good.
That top one with the border looks like a Joint Meritorious Unit.
JMUC… Yup, that’s one of ’em… I remember it now because I always pronounced it Jay Muck in my head
Is the American Defense ribbon the same as the National Defense Service Medal?
No, they are two separate awards.
Amercan Defense was for service between 8 September 1939 and 7 December 1941, and it’s mostly yellow with tiny red white and blue stripes
NDSM is mostly red with yellow in the middle. I got it for being in during Desert Storm, although I spent that whole event in dry dock in Virginia.
I followed you around for 6-months prior to your dry-dock. I was stationed on your sister ship. We split up in the Caribbean after Rio De Janeiro. You went North, and we went West through the Panama Canal. That was a fun cruise.
Rio was amazing. What ship were you on?
The USS Long Beach (CGN-9). I met a Swedish girl on Ipanema Beach, while drinking Caipirinhas. Dated her for a couple years.
Yep. Loved Rio.
Does Little League count?
Got an Obscury once, which rocked.
Yeah, me too!
Not a trophy or ribbon, but my name is up on a wall at my high school. Was a National Merit Scholar in the 1970’s, just learned about the name on the wall last year (from my brother, whose youngest child is graduating this year from the same school). Hated school, so mixed feelings about it.
I won 1st place in the 6th grade science fair.
My dad helped me build a telegraph system. There were two ends and they could send morse code between the ends. It looked good because my dad helped. But I understood how it worked and was able to explain it to the judges.
I’m still working on my collection in the Air Force; nothing too exciting but I did legitimately earn my first EIC marksman badge about a year ago.
What’s the EIC stand for?
Excellence in Competition. It’s a program thru the CMP where you accrue points in regional matches.

I was stoked after I got the call that I had placed, only to have an instructor the following week who was a retired O6 and the #1 civilian marksman in the country. I couldn’t go a day without getting put back in my place.
No.
