If I went through unspeakable tragedy and latched on to some pointless policy proposals as a result, I’d expect you to humor me a bit.
“No, my hate is the righteous hate that should be praised, not the bad hate.” -Everyone
Isn’t “a good guy with a gun” the premise of modern government?
Arming teachers might be a bad idea, but it still sounds like a more realistic idea than just hoping some random law will stop someone intent on murder from getting one of the hundreds of millions of guns in this country.
Gun industry profits drive the push for gun rights about as much as wedding industry profits drove the push for gay marriage.
I think one of the only things that could save the Republicans in 2018 would be the Democrats running on banning all semiautomatics.
I don’t think the gun control side is any closer to realizing that their own hate and anger is their biggest obstacle.
Just finally got to watching the US take on Canada in the men’s curling round robin. Man, my heart was in my throat on that last shot Shuster made. Intense.
They should pass a law saying you can’t own more than 57 guns. If someone has 58 or more guns, they’re up to something.
Remember: You can’t abolish rights. That’s not how rights work. The idea is they are God-given and thus exist outside the framework of the law. The only thing you can do against rights is use government force to infringe them.
Oh man, I was so behind on curling. I didn’t know we made it to the semi-finals! Trump is finally doing it; he’s making America great again! ?
After Team Shuster lost to Norway and was 2-4, I gave up hope. What a comeback!
I remember being so frustrated with Shuster in the past (“Can’t someone else skip?!”) but was still glad he was representing the U.S. once again this year because I wanted to see him win. And now he’s got a medal from pure grit.
My favorite on the team might be Tyler George. Whether he’s done a good shot or a bad shot, he always has the same confused expressions like “What am I even doing here?” I hope he keeps it for the podium.
Rights are not some arbitrary list of things we picked and said “God said we could have these.” They’re all the non-violent things you’d naturally be able to do unless someone used force to stop you.
If you’re going to pick an arbitrary age to say that someone is an adult (and I don’t know a more fair way) it seems that eligibility to vote, eligibility to legally purchase a firearm or alcohol, and eligibility for the draft should all sync up on it.
Doesn’t absolutely everyone believe a good guy with a gun is the antidote to a bad guy with a gun? Otherwise, wouldn’t we disarm government?
Or does the government just have those guns to make sure we pay taxes?
Wouldn’t a common sense gun law be you can’t designate an area a gun free zone unless you provide armed security? Otherwise you’re just trying to protect people with wishful thinking.
This country really needs a long involved conversation on the concepts of rights so people understand what they are and what they aren’t. There isn’t a topic more important to this country and yet people seem very confused on it.
I still feel like I’m not understanding something. So there was a guy there with a gun just standing there while kids got shot? And there are people defending that course of action?
This gun control debate has gotten so unhinged it’s made Trump look like the calm, reasoned one.
I guess the idea behind an assault weapons ban is that no self-respecting mass shooter would wield a used AR-15.
At this point, resigning isn’t enough for the Broward Country Sheriff. He needs to leave the country in shame.
I’m so excited over Shuster in the gold medal game. This is over a decade of fandom paying off. It’s like that Kurt Russell movie with the hockey team except for real (but this game is for the gold, not just the semifinal — who plotted that movie?).
So far do you think we are from solving the gun issue? Another week maybe?
I don’t even like the NRA anymore because they’ve gone full partisan culture war which is toxic. But I’m starting to like everyone else less.
Is there a German word for that shame you feel when you go ahead and click on a clickbaity headline?
Enough gabbing about all this like it matters. There’s isn’t going to be any significant gun control legislation while Republicans are in charge… or (as Obama demonstrated) when they aren’t.
I think the only big result of this now is the NRA is going to get record membership. But hey, those members won’t get a Hertz discount anymore. Take that, guns!
Angry mobs trying to bully people out of their political beliefs are counterproductive.
All The Simpsons have strength and flaws. To be the party of just one of them would make you terrible. But a party lacking any of them would also be fatally flawed.
Shuster finished 10th in 2010. 9th in 2014. USA Curling tried to push him out before this Olympics. Still he made it here but was 2-4 after 6 games with the toughest teams left on the round robin. And now his team has won 5 games straight to get the gold.
That’s grit. Just kept at it no matter how many times he was down. What a great story and a great team.
I hope Shuster’s double take out to lying five gets a lot of TV play. Not everyone will understand what’s going on there but they’ll know something cool just happened. #curling
The way Congress won’t budge on guns it’s like they’re all in the pocket of people who consistently vote.
My 4yo son is doing T-ball so we bought a baseball game for the Switch to teach him the basics: which direction to run after hitting the ball, what an out is, and despising the Yankees.
“If we project extreme hate towards tens of millions of Americans we disagree with, they’ll magically disappear and we’ll win.” -popular political strategy
How about instead of trying to shut down views you disagree with you learn to argue better? Or is that too old fashioned now?
We won the gold medal in curling; why is everyone still arguing and being mean to each other?
I’ve never heard a good debate on whether the government has a right to own posses and wield firearms.
If there is an individual right to bear arms, then the government bearing arms could be framed as an extension of that.
If there is no individual right to bear arms, then it’s unclear where the government would get a right to bear arms from.
The idea of the government having special rights individual don’t have has always been shaky. It’s always more: “We’re the government and we have guns, so don’t question this.”
What do you think the effect of going after NRATV is going to be? I don’t think most people even knew it existed, and now everyone is going to be wondering what are these views so dangerous they shouldn’t be allowed to hear them.
I swear the gun control people had an Overton Window to do something, but absolutely everything they’ve done has been counter-productive such that that’s been slammed shut and they may succeed in shifting things in the other direction.
Let’s try to be better this next week. We should aspire to be a country worthy of our gold medal curling team.
Trying to have views you disagree with taken off the air is unAmerican plain and simple and shouldn’t be tolerated by either side.
What ever happened to plain old mockery, people? Come on; tone the authoritarian impulse down a few notches.
In 2010, inspired by John Shuster (sure, he lost badly that year, but we loved his attitude), my wife and I tried out curling and really enjoyed it. Now that the kids are older, I think we’ll give it another go.
It’s not an easy sport to get into with the special ice rink and stones needed for it, but it’s a lot of fun.
So where’s Harvey Weinstein? Isn’t he supposed to be taking on the NRA?
Maybe Amazon, Apple, and Roku can move NRATV to some special “Forbidden Views” section. “Don’t listen to these forbidden views or you might be SHOCKED and AMAZED!”
The U.S. is a great country full of a lot of cool and very different people, all with something unique to contribute. If we could learn to get along a little bit better, we could do anything.
I want to write a screenplay for the Team Shuster movie. I’d probably take some liberties such as making the Swedes evil so the finale would be more satisfying.
If they succeed in getting NRATV banned, what do you think the next target is? My guess would be FOX News.
There is such a double standard; imagine the outrage if Marvel were making a White Widow movie.
Is Michael Wolff a Mike Myers character?
Actual thought process today.
“Uh oh. Kevin Smith is trending…”
“Oh, it’s for a heart attack. Not sexual assault or something.”
“Wait, that’s also really bad.”
You can’t expect someone with a handgun to take on an AR-15. An AR-15 takes off a third of a health bar per shot while a handgun only takes off an eighth.
Since he’s president, Twitter should give Trump a special caps lock that makes his text even bigger than everyone else’s.
I remember being a teenager and talking about politics. I’m glad no one put me on national TV.
We’re going back to Net Neutrality alarmism? I thought we were done with that. Are we going back to tax cut alarmism too, or are we completely done with that one?
The “AR” in AR-15 stands for the sound a pirate makes since the gun was popular with the villainous Blackbeard.
Prayer is a good thing and it should not make you unhappy.
Hey, let have a talk about politics. They’re not good. And everyone should be opposed to them. Call up your congressman and tell him you’re opposed to politics.
What if all this heated rhetoric led to a civil war between people with guns and people without guns?
Don’t fall for it, gun people. You’ll look like jerks.
