OK, was Gomer Pyle drafted, or did he enlist?
You’d have to check the Andy Griffith Show episode “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C” (see Netflix) for details, but I believe he got a notice from his draft board, but chose to enlist in the Marines.
So the answer is “both”.
Once I got old enough to understand it I really hated Gomer Pyle. I even thought about writing a satire where Sergeant Carter volunteers for Vietnam to get away from that idiot. After a couple weeks guess who shows up?
After a series of typical Gomer Pyle screw ups the two of them end up being captured by the VC.They plan to escape but naturally Gomer screws it up but Carter still recovers and gets the drop on the VC. So he’s standing there with a rifle covering them with Gomer standing next to him with his usual idiotic platitudes. Carter finally snaps turns and shoots Pyle in the head. He then turns and looks at the VC and they all nod turn around and melt into the jungle. Carter turns around a starts walking back toward friendly lines.
Now do Gilligan’s Island.
Same thing except The Skipper commands a swift boat and Gilligan is played by John Kerry.

Good on ya Marines…good on ya! Happy Birthday! As a side note: At the American Legion post that I’m a member of we have a couple of retired Marines, however both will tell anyone who wants to listen that there is no such thing as a retired Marine…there are only Marines.
Marines show the rest of us which way to go… follow them and you’ll find Victory!
