Straight Line of the Day: OK, I see that some Nukers were alive in the 70’s. Car memories include…

I’ll begin: the green Monte Carlo I had, at 18 (because back then kids could afford beater cars), and the super-8 film I took of it (because video cameras were far out of my price range!)

Also had a ’68 blue Mustang hardtop with a 390 engine. Had to get rid of it when my Dad objected to it sitting in the driveway forever, waiting for funds for shocks repair. Wonder what it would be worth today! Second owner.

  1. Putting a sound system into my 1968 Mercury Montego, and having to shape a board to hold the rear speakers when the cardboard rear deck couldn’t hold them.

Also, helping my dad rebuild a 1963 Plymouth Belvedere engine after blowing a hole in a piston, then having the engine so tight that it wouldn’t run until we set the idle so that it would go 30 mph without touching the gas pedal…

  2. I remember a friend who had an old Buick Roadmaster that had a bad starter. Everywhere we went, all the passengers had to get out and push it fast enough that he could pop the clutch and get it to kick over…

    • Those were things still into the 90s, and might still be today. I recall owning two Ford Taurus wagons with the third seat, and once saw a Volvo with them as well.

Don’t recall Subarus ever having them, and I think that covers most of the major players in station wagons.

  3. 1971 Plymouth Duster with the Straight Six. Dad bought it from a church member for $1. We immediately named it “The Doghouse” because, well, the owner had been using it as a doghouse. Fur, crap and other unidentified detritus was found in that car, had to tear out the seats and literally hose it out. One bonus was that the neighborhood kids had been working on the motor for fun and it was in tip-top shape.

After replacing the seats with those from a 1972 Dodge Demon, we put in some remnant green carpet from the house (matched the exterior) and upgraded the stereo system, it later received The Lambrogreeni. One neat feature was that I could pull the key out of the ignition and toss it to the folks riding with me and the car kept running. Also there were these 2 manual vent doors just under the dashboard that were convenient for keeping…stuff.

    Oh, memories…
