Has anyone ever come up with an explanation of what this Carl Perkins song was all about?
If it weren’t for the Beatles cover, I never would have heard it.
I said I’m sittin’ here watchin’
Matchbox hole in my clothes
I said I’m sittin’ here wonderin’
Matchbox hole in my clothes
I ain’t got no matches but I sure
Got a long way to goI’m an ole poor boy, and I’m a
Long way from home
I’m an ole poor boy, and I’m a
Long way from home
I’ve never been happy cause everything I
Ever did was wrongWell, if you don’t want my peaches, honey
Please don’t shake my tree
If you don’t want any of those peaches honey
Please don’t mess around my tree
I got news for you baby
Leave me here in miseryAlright!

You’re slightly off on the opening lyrics. Should be:
“Well I’m sitting here wondering will a matchbox hold my clothes…”
I’m not sure what it means. Could indicate that ol’ Carl didn’t have a suitcase, or he had so few clothes they’d go in a matchbox (or both). Great tune, though (as recorded by Perkins; I’ve never heard the Beatles’ cover).
Original lyrics here.
You can’t handle the truth!
Moral of the story: Don’t play with matches unless they’re safety matches.
I don’t play with matches anymore. Blow torch works so much faster.
