Anyone been watching the latest season of 24? Luckily a friend recorded the first four episodes onto DVD for me and SarahK (we were on the road, then), and I just saw the fifth one last night (in HD with 5.1 – oh yeah!). A new character this season is Secretary of Defense Heller. In the first episode, when his hippy son rants about the military industrial complex, he retorts, “I’ve had enough of your sixth-grade, Michael Moore logic.” Later, after he and his daughter have been captured by terrorists (Muslim terrorists, like in real life), he tries his own escape by strangling one terrorist (remind you of anyone?) and shooting two others (apparently he knows his firearms as he stops to check the chamber of an AK-47 upon obtaining it). After being captured again, he tries to sacrifice himself to keep America from being humiliated by an internet broadcast of a sham crimes against humanity trial.
Well, hope he survives. Cool start to the season and still nineteen hours left to go.

Is his name Chomps?
i watched the last 2 episodes. I’ve never watched before, but I am SOOOOOOOO hooked now

On a related note, that same actor is the President (with a similar attitude) in Stargate SG-1 (starting in season 7, I believe). Even demands the surrender of a numerically and technologically supierior force.

The big question is…where is Kim Bauer? Is she dead? Is she dead yet!?!
PLEASE, PLEASE GOD, LET HER BE DEAD!!! And make it painful!
JasonL,
I believe it was mentioned that she and Chase (Bauer’s partner from last season) are married.
Frank, I think you might have some sort of lawsuit here. Heller sounds a lot like the Rumsfield Strangler. The 24 writers have been reading “In My World”. Do you think he will strangle reporters if he gets loose? Oh God I hope so!
I thought it was season eight of stargate Sg-1 that this guy played president. Right before the premiere of stargate Atlantis. Remember it is when Kensey replaced Gen. Hammond with that new gal.
Was he wearing a red shirt? That was always the kiss of death in Star Trek.
Well, to add to the reason it is topical and raising the ire of the islomafascists, you could vist my blog and see I have a link to an article on Little Green Footballs regarding CAIR going to complain to Fox about how 24 is stereotyping Islamic people as terrorists….DUH!
Anyhow…My post is at this link.
Have you all learned nothing about 24 in the past couple of years?
Heller will turn out to be the bad guy and the Muslims you think are bad will turn out to be pawns in a much larger conspiracy perpetrated by our own government and/or a large corporation.
The evidence I’m using to put forth this theory is the fact that the previous three seasons ALL had similar “twists” revealed in the last few episodes.
I know I just said the equivalent of “God doesn’t need churches” to the 24 faithful, but I hope one day you will come to see see it as 95 theses nailed to the door of Surnow and Cochran’s office door.
I thought it was a requirement for the Secretary of Defense to be well trained in all weapons, just in case he finds himself in such a situation. If not, we should look into that.
I was moving, and couldn’t TIVO the first four hours. DirecTV wouldn’t install my dish until the phone was set up. Stupiud Bastrads! Frank, as a capitalist, how much to take those DVD’s off yer hands?
I was sad, there was only one terroist death last night. However next week should be good, with Jack going in the terroist hideout. 😉
I’ve decided that this season of 24 may be a bit of a Rorshach test.
CAIR sees it as yet another example of American culture hurting the image of the Muslim world through fictional terrorists — all the while ignoring actual terrorists.
We IMAO fans are probably, deep-down, annoyed that this Defense Secretary didn’t slaughter everyone with his adamantium claws.
And I guaran-damn-tee you that there are people in this country who think terrorists ought to put a Defense Secretary on trial.
The Real Scott let me count the ways you are wrong.
Season 1 was retaliation for a covert-op that went bad and ended up killing the wife and daughter of a potential dictator. The sons were not in anyway connected to the US government. It was an operation that was green lit by Palmer and executed by Jack and the nemesis from Season 3.
Season 2, while it is true that government officials knew about a bomb plot, they were not the organizers of it. Rather, they saw it as an opportunity to prove how much more spending is needed and allowed them to get into the country so that they could capture them and make a big media extravaganza. They attempted to follow the bomb and ended up losing it. The true originator of the plot was a wealthy European sitting somewhere that looked like the Mediterranean.
Season 3 was about the British agenet who helped Jack attempt to assassinate the main bad guy from Season 1 coming back after having been imprisoned by the guards from said bad guy.
I don’t know how you were able to twist (unless your mind is equally twisted) the stories to give them an anti-American spin. All of your brief synopses were wrong. Although you do spin facts almost as good as the people (and I use that term lightly) on DU.
Jason L., She and Chase are together and living in Florida, where Chase is working for a private security company and the baby is doing fine.
And is it just me, or were the guys who got out of their car to F* with the terrorist, the funniest scene in 24. Think about it, people are always saying you shouldn’t jump to conclusion about people based on their race and if these guys had not been interupted by the cops, they would have helped slow down the terrorist activity. He wouldn’t have been able to contact his boss and they would have been scambling trying to find them.
I’m rooting for the terrorists. I know it is probably hopeless- especially from FOX.
Heller probably deserves to be on trial as a war criminal if the show reflects any of the realities the Bush administration.
*** Moonbat Alert*** Sheesh! That didn’t take long.
Anyway, I JUST started watching and am TOTALLY hooked!
And I agree with Ren…how in the world could the terrorists be the ‘good’ guys when that terrorist mom killed the boy’s girlfriend…my jaw just dropped when that happened.
Anyway, it’s now on my list of MUST watch TV!
Ren,
Just for the sake of accuracy, Kim and Chase are living in Valencia, California. Which happens to be about 20 miles or so from where the terrorists are holding Heller.
Anyhow, I think it is great that the best blog is talking about the best drama on TV.
24 is a great show. I immediately thought of the Rumsfeld strangler when I saw the SecDef in the show.
Yeah, 24 is the best freakin’ show on TV in ages.
To those people who missed episodes, just so you’ll know… very high quality digital versions usually show up online within 24 hours… bitorrent.
Also, everybody be careful what you post about the past happenings on the show. Some of these potential 24-junkies may not have seen them. We wouldn’t want to ruin anything for them.
Where do I find on-line versions of 24???!!!
You guys are great.
Muslim = terrorist, just like real life!
OK
The only similarities between Heller and Rummy are that they both play Sec Def on TV and both appear in human form. I mean old squinty couldn’t shoot his way out of a paper bag and the most menacing thing he’s ever strangled would be a puppy. Not a tough puppy like a lab or rot, but one of those little yappy dog puppies. Now if “strangling a terrorist” is just a euphemism for masturbation, then I could see the comparison.
Attention, associates. Cleanup in aisle 24. x_x
I’ve never seen 24. I may start. But what I really want is my Threat Matrix back.
I still remember the episode where they chucked the suicide bomber into the bomb truck, vest and all. Clearly one of the finest moments in television history– “We can’t get the vest off him!” “Okay.” Guy opens the bomb squad’s bomb containment truck and chucks the guy in, then slams the door shut and locks it down. Everyone takes cover. Truck jumps like three feet in the air as the explosives go off Hahahaaaaa
That’s a lot of scat
Anyone ever seen the movie WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE starring Rutger Hauer and Gene Simmons (of KISS fame) ? In it, Simmons plays a Middle Eastern terrorist and Hauer is a bounty hunter who has been hired to track Simmons down. He’s been told that if he brings him in alive, he’ll get a bonus. At the end of the movie, he’s got a hand grenade shoved in Gene’s mouth with his finger on the pin and is pulling him around by the pin. In a great cinematic moment of anti-terrorism, Hauer looks into Simmons’ non-caring eyes and just says, “You know what? F**k the bonus”. He then pulls the pin (Simmons’ hands are tied behind his back) and walks away…
