This was a running gag – blind butler and deaf/mute maid – in the who-done-it movie spoof “Murder by Death” . If you haven’t seen it you really, really should.
It is one of the funniest moves ever made, but by today’s standards totally racist because of Peters Sellers portrayal of the famous Chinese detective Sidney Wang. Here’s an example…. Sidney Wang: Conversation like television set on honeymoon, unnecessary!
There was also the line where Peter Faulk’s hardboiled detective character, Sam Diamond, is asked to explain how the blind butler could be sure to give a poisoned glass to Sidney Wang. He explained “It wouldn’t be too hard to sniff out the Chinaman.”
