Got this one from Best Buy. Bigger and more expensive that I was planning, but that’s insane specs at that price (and it’s actually better than advertised; it’s a 1920×1200 WUXGA 17″ monitor, not a 1440×900 WXGA). The thing is a gaming machine and supposed to be able to run Crysis on high settings. It might even be powerful enough to run Vista.
Anyway, screw you guys; I have to go set it up.

Good for you!
When I get my Stimulus Check from that one, I’m gonna buy one just like it!
(Right after I pay off the 4 credit cards, the car, the home equity loan, and the mortgage I’ll get right on that!)
No, it still won’t run ‘Vista’ without crashing…
Is she brandishing a SW 686?
; ) Nice looking specs.

I play TF2 still mostly, but hear Left For Dead is getting very good reviews. BitTech users voted it the best game of 2008, and is supposed to be a really great co-op shooter (hopefully as good as Doom2 co-op)

EIGHT POUNDS?????
I’m guessing you are thinking desktop replacement then. I have to be prepared to lug mine around hotels for presentations, or on the train, or blocks around a city if necessary. My 5 year old P4 is plenty heavy and can now be outperformed by something a third the weight and price with twice the specs, so that’s my idea of the next machine.
I tend to keep the performance on the desktop and mobility on the laptop, or at least I will when I replace my laptop.
BTW, a lot of really slick games (Bioshock, Orange Box, etc.) are dirt cheap now.
[Heh. I know. I really want to play Mass Effect which last I saw was $19.99 on Amazon. Too bad I blew all my allowance on the computer. -Ed.]
Oh wow. A Gateway. Well, have fun for a little bit. We’ll be here to hear the bitching when it screws up on you.
Which should happen in about 3…..2……
Hey, you got a Gateway like I recommended! (Though I seriously doubt that my comment played any part whatsoever in your decision) Congrats on a nice new comp.
At Kent, no kidding! My local Walls got a bunch of computer games in stock, and I was surprised by how cheap everything was, even before the Walls discount (if you don’t know, Walls buys out stores that go out of business or burn down, they occasionally get really awesome stuff in stock), which was at 25% off for most games, and they had Spore for $20 (and I am 100% certain it wasn’t just the creature creator) which pissed me off, having bought it for 50 the previous month, it’s so hard to resist going out and buying all the games I never got around to playing when they cost like 20 bucks.
Don’t worry. Once Microsoft updates, you will be playing Crysis on high settings any more.
Your “latop” sounds like it has something in common with Sen. Robert Byrd: it’s too old to have a “p.”
I was going to say something snarky about the misspelling of latop, but I don’t think I can match Tommy on this one.
As usual so hospitable and amiable. That’s our Frank. Good thing he has funny friends.
I don’t know a laptop from a lapdog, but I do know one thing:
No computer is powerful enough to defeat Vista.
Left 4 Dead is a freaking awesome game, especially if you are into the whole “zombie apocalypse” idea. It’s a good game with which to test your laptop.
You’ll be fine. The 4 gigs of ram and the gig video card are the money on this thing. Nice.
Your deluded, that thing can’t run Crysis on high settings. Nothing can run Crysis on high!
If your going for orange box, bioshock, or left from dead (all games I recommend). Do it through steam, and never have to maintain the dvd.
Left 4 Dead is awesome. I got out of computer gaming a while back due to every two years being forced to upgrade my video card and every 4 years having to upgrade the entire PC. Now I just stick with linux for my desktop OS and use my 360 for everything else.
Sounds like a nice laptop, Frank.
Frank, get CCleaner and other must-haves from http://www.filehippo.com
Best, cleanest software accessory site on earth. Articulate too.
This is not spam. This is a bold, direct order. 🙂
WooOO, you got my laptop! I claim victory!
Seriously, though, that machine is *awesome*. If the orange lights annoy you (sometimes when you’re watching/playing dark stuff you notice them reflected off the screen) the little light bulb for Fn-F1 (I think?) turns them off. I don’t think that was in the manual, I just found it out experimentally one day.
Frank: if you do wind up getting Steam (and with that laptop you’d be crazy not to), please post your Steam ID so we can all friend you.
That is all.

4 of 7,
Have you forgotten the election already? You speak as if you don’t even recognize the power of The One.
Windows 7 Beta will be available for download this afternoon (9 Jan 09) at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx
Paradoxically, it’s faster and uses less resources than Vista ever did… and it’s only a beta version.
You got this from Best Buy?
Dood! Read all the fine print ASAP! A bigger den of thieves and vermin does not exist than in the Blue Box with the Yellow Tag.
It’s probably out of warranty already.
I had two (wife & me) gateway laptops. After about 8 months, the power cord no longer worked on mine, so I sent it to gateway, and they nicely fixed it. After the warranty, about 13, maybe 14, months in, mine went out and then the wife’s went out. Now, mine is my 2 yr old grandson’s “computer.” I thought about commenting when you first mentioned this, but who would have thought you would get a gateway.

#28 — Oooh Oohhh let me guess, los Angeles? Las Vegas? The White House next week?
Ding ding ding ding! We have a winner. Isn’t this game fun? Sorry, ussjc, you were too late. 😉
#24 – Spyndrilleum,
I refuse to use capital letters when referring to that one.
I wasn’t complaining, just prioritizing.
Take out the high interest debt first, then double and triple up on the bigger debts until they’re all gone.
Also saving for a rainy day.
If that one and his ilk in dc budgeted as if he were spending his own money instead of ours, we’d be doing all right.

heh. . . a gateway. . . yeah, good luck with that
