In looking at this day in other ways…Everyone should immediately watch Band of Brothers. All 11 hours.
You don’t have to watch it straight, I broke down about 6-7 hours in.
Breaking down is actually good for a civvie like me, reminds me that the guys on the line didn’t have time for a nap, didn’t have time to make a beer run, didn’t have time to nuke the moon.
And so, beyond D-Day we got the Battle of the Bulge. Whereas the 101st Airborne, freezing, wounded and with no supplies, told Patton and everyone else when they came rolling in:
‘We dinna need no ‘rescuing”.
Band of Brothers has another great set o’ lines..again paraphrasing:
REMF Weenie: You’ll be surrounded!
CO:We’re Airborne, we’re always surrounded.*
So, I humbly ask our mighty host to start a thread of stupid things REMFs and civvies say to our great men and women who are being shot at. Preferably every military response should end in an … which will mean (muttered not so quietly under yer breath) ‘stupid civvie’.
Example:
Media Military Analyst Moron: You’ll be outnumbered, outgunned, and have no support!
Marine: Duh, thas why they called us up …*
*
Airborne: We jump out of airplanes into enemy territory, being surrounded is part of our job.
Marine: Yer lucky I’m a Marine(fulla Honor and Duty) or else I might forget my manners and kick your ass for implying me and my men can’t do the job.
You mean like apologizing to our enemies when we should be remembering our brave soldiers who fought at
Normandy? Come on, what are you smoking, Harvey?
I was angry when Brown jokingly referred to Omaha Beach being Obama beach. Nobody died on Omaha just so a crooked Chicago president can waist more money on pork, then was spent on all of WWII, even when adjusted for inflation.
For those who get the chance, the D-Day Memorial in Bedford Va. pays some well deserved respect to those who risked and sacrificed all in those terrible and bloody hours and days of the invasion. I think the web site is http://www.dday.org to learn more. The bravery of those who survived was rewarded by the challenge of fighting until wounded or killed in those days before fresh units were rotated in to replace the battle weary. For those countries who joined the battle this American thanks you also.
I watched the ceremony on CNN this evening.
When the Chaplain took the podium to give the invocation, the camera showed a brief closeup of the president holding his hand up to his face.
Was that the beginning of a 2nd finger face scratch I saw in the instant before the view changed?
Capitan Ed had a good point of how discusting it was that Elizabeth Winsor (Better known as Queen Elizabeth II, or to her friends “Lizzy Bennizzy Mynizzle”) The only head of state that actualy served in the military during WW II, didn’t recieve an invite untill almost the last minute.(She was a mechanic on trucks. Dang!!! Women who can fix vehicles?!? That’s kinda hot!) It would have been nice to see them honor her service. In any military opperation, the support rolls are usualy overlooked; especialy women’s rolls in support of combat. She declied due to the short notice, and sent her son, Prince Charles in her place. She should have sent Prince Harry who actualy had the cahones to serve in a combat roll in Afganistan.
I’m glad the president actually went. It was not that long ago that President Clinton decided to skip this event, Go to Russia, and then refuse to leave his hotel room to protest something that no one remembers.
The sad reality is we need to enjoy these celebrations while we can. Most of the heroes that served at these locations have passed away. In a few years only the people that remember those Friends or family that served will remember their accomplishments.
It’s so difficult for Obama to suffer through ceremonies celebrating the greatness of Americans.
Everyone keeps forgetting that he wasn’t raised as an American, wasn’t even raised in this country, and was never taught the greatness of America and all the instances throughout our nation’s history that we’ve sacrificed to protect the freedom of others. Instead, he was raised as a Kenyan, and has always resented America.
come D-Day +75, President Palin will make the sort of speech that the fallen deserve.
Amen! And perhaps by then Harvey will no longer squeak around her! 😉
(Just joshing; it’s so adorable the way he crushes on her crushworthy awesomeness)
We all know Obama has absolutely no class.

OK, that link does work, and a nice photo gallery of exhibits there as well.
The tragedy of D-Day is that we didn’t learn anything from what happened to cause it.

My father was 82nd AB and was one of those who took St. Mere-Iglise that morning.
He wore and 82nd AB pin till the day he died.
“Hold until relieved…”
And what did Google.com honor on June 6, 2009?
Tetris. They honored Tetris.

What’s wrong with 70? Why should we wait til 75?
Denise – a serious answer: I thought about using 70 in the post, but then I realized that 75 is a “cooler” number because it’s 3/4 of 100.
And yes, we can have her for both.
Most excellent words Harvey, YES WE CAN.
