  1. An Acronym? Yes.
But what about the Etymology (or history) of the word Democrat?

First we will start with Democracy or in Ancient Greek a ‘Demos-kratia’.

    ‘Kratos’ means ‘power’ or ‘authority’.
From the Ancient Greek suffix -κρατία (kratia), from κράτος (kratos, “power, rule”).

‘Demos’ means ‘of demons’ or ‘in the company of demons’.
From Ancient Greek δαίμων (daimōn, “demons, gods, divine power”)

Together we get ‘a company of powerful Demons’, ‘accompanied by powerful Demons’ or just Demonic Power all of which still apply to the modern meaning of the word Democrats.

    Demos-kratia
    Democrats are Powerful Demons
    Οι Σοσιαλδημοκράτες είναι ισχυρά δαίμονες
