As a 911 dispatcher I find the very premise of this “article”–beginning with the title–extremely offensive! Let any Domino Pizza employee stay on the phone with, let alone respond to, the frantic call from someone who IS it imminent danger…Let them decipher when the call is from someone who THINKS they are in imminent danger, but is only hearing a herd of deer running from a coyote outside of their house at 02:00. Each of these calls require a police response, so the “deer in my yard” call STILL takes time away from other calls. Let your Pizza Boy decide which is a true emergency. OH YES>> Please make sure he responds appropriately so that he and his entire department (i.e. Dominos franchise) are not held up to constant second guessing by people and the media who take the words of someone like Al Sharpton over the words of someone like Martin Luther King.

I second-guess Harvey enough to guess in this case that his traditional point is that the over-extended and under-staffed police are farther away from one’s door, in an emergency, due to the factors you describe, than the gun in your house that the anti-Second-Amendmenters would not allow.
So there’s no difference of opinion here.

All my respect to 911 dispatcher – they’ve got an insanely-pressured and thankless job that I wouldn’t have the nerve to perform satisfactorily.
I’d be in the fetal position within the first hour of trying to fill your shoes.
So a couple of weekends ago I had occasion to call 911. First time I’d ever done it. The service I requested was there in about seven minutes. I’m thinking they got lost a couple minutes looking for my house because I could hear the sirens going away for a minute, but it was much faster than pizza.
As for the occasion: I had a stroke. But that’s another story that can wait for a more relevant thread….
The point being that if you don’t have your own pistol, you may have to wait for the rest of your life for the police to bring theirs.
My wife’s latest copy of American Rifleman (yes, my wife’s in the NRA) has, as always, a page devoted to self defense stories. One was of a woman who used her gun to defend herself from the man who invaded her home and hold him until the police got there, 30 minutes after she called.
Reminds me of a joke: A fellow observed some burglars breaking into a shed on his property. He called 911 and was connected to the police dispatcher. When he described the situation, he was told that it was low priority and that response would be delayed at least an hour. He then retrieved his handgun, detained the burglars and called 911 again. He reported that he had just shot the burglars and the police needed to come and retrieve the bodies. Two squad cars arrived within 7 minutes to find the burglars alive and well. Incensed, the officer in charge confronted the homeowner, saying: “I thought you said that you shot two men dead!”. Whereupon the homeowner replied: “I thought you said you couldn’t get here for an hour.”
