I have never read the Harry Potter books or seen the movies. Can you read them in any order and figure out what is going on like you can with Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, or do you have to read them in order?

I’ve always had a problem with the fact that, if a good guy is trapped in a prison, he can essentially say “Escapabus Porthollus!” and get out. Unless the bad guy invokes an anti-spell. In which case, what use is magic in the plot? Invalidates all dramatic tension.
My least favorite plot device – cell phones that suddenly fail to work.
