This Is How to Get Hot Glue Banned

Possibly the most creative use of cardboard I’ve ever seen. However, I wish he’d be a little more specific about how much rubbing alcohol you need in the bottle for this to work. It has to be more than just the wee sniff of fumes the video implies.

  1. “…. It has to be more than just the wee sniff of fumes the video implies.”

    It doesn’t take much.

You also can’t sit around taking your time to aim either as the fumes dissipate pretty quickly.

And if you just want something to test the explosive force of rubbing alcohol take a tennis ball can, drill a small hole in the bottom of the can about three-quarters of an inch from the bottom. Pour in about half a capful of rubbing alcohol, drop a tennis ball in the can, touch a match or lighter to the hole…. foom! And the tennis ball is half-way down the block. I probably should have said for step one you need to be outside…

  2. Same concept as the Polish cannons we made when I was a kid. We just used lighter fluid or gasoline. We taped together steel soda or beer cans after punching holes in the lids and removing the lids of the top one or two. Fired tennis balls.

  3. That little bit of alcohol coating the inside of the soda bottle is plenty to produce that amount of thrust. The higher the purity, the bigger the thrust. Working with high strength rubbing alcohol, I can attest to this fact.

Real trick, like they did in the video, is to coat as much of the bottle walls with alcohol as possible.
