  1. I just spent a few days in CA on business. At the hotel restaurant the bill has a notice –

this bill has a surcharge due to the recent state minimum wage increase. this goes to pay the newly mandated hourly pay for our employees. this is not a tip.

So I just signed my bill and didnt leave a tip.

The waiter took my check and then came back and awkwardly explained to me the surcharge thing again and pointed out that I didn’t tip him.

I said “what difference does it make? You got a raise and the surcharge pays for it. You wanted $15 an hour as a “living wage”. when you were making 5-6 bucks an hour we felt bad for you and understood tips were part of your income. Now you’re making $15 an hour and I dont feel bad for you anymore. Nobody tips ME for doing my job.”

I think he wanted to argue with me but knew I had a very compelling argument and tipping IS optional.

So I just spent the better part of a week just paying my bill and not leaving tips. I paid $18 for a hamburger. Without the tip.

another drawback of visiting Commiefornia is I keep waking up at 3 am because of the time difference.

I don’t want to make the effort to reset my sleep schedule cause I’ll get back to the US in a few days and sleep till 8 or 9 and everyone will think I’m some kind of lazy Californian.
