Thursday Night Open Thread

I’m not all that familiar with Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. The musical group, I mean. They actually sound okay.

They began to really catch on with a song called “Zoot Suit Riot” which has a swing sound to it. Lyrically, it takes the side of the Zoot Suit crowd instead of the Naval personnel involved in the riots. It makes the sailors out to be the aggressors, ignoring the fact that the first attacks in what became the Zoot Suit Riots were actually against sailors who were chatting up some women in the street. Yes, the sailors retaliated the next day. And it spread out from Los Angeles to areas all across the U.S.

‘You’re not welcome!’: Worried residents tell rich ‘virus refugees’ flocking to the Hamptons, Martha’s Vineyard and Aspen to stay away to stop the spread of coronavirus in their communities

• Wealthy Americans living in populated cities are looking to their second homes in quiet coastal and ski communities to escape the coronavirus outbreak

• Full-time residents in so-called tourist towns fear that visitors will increase exposure to the virus and stretch already limited local resources and hospitals

• Vacation hot spots across the US such as Martha’s Vineyard, Jackson Hole and the Florida Keys have issued pleas for out-of-towners to stay away

But, there’s another side to every story.

Partners Healthcare, the parent company of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, asked [Massachusetts] Gov. Baker to consider whether a ban on travel to both Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket should be considered.

Baker, during a briefing on Sunday, referenced the concerns on the islands: “We have talked to people on both Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard who say that a lot of people who have second homes there have been going there. We would prefer they not do that, and that they would stay on the mainland and don’t create additional issues for both of those islands at this point in time; they don’t have the same level of service capacity that they typically have in the summer. We continue to work on the strategies that we have with respect to social distancing, and we’re going to continue to adjust those as we see fit.”

The letter came a day after a joint statement was released late Friday by Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and Nantucket Cottage Hospital, in which the institutions urged people considering trips to the islands to stay home, off-Island.

“Consider the limitations of our critical-access hospitals during this unprecedented time of pandemic,” the statement read. “For your safety, and to save lives, we strongly advise you to STAY AT HOME. The perception that the Islands are a safe haven is not realistic given the limited number of personnel, critical supplies, and beds. Our system will not be able to handle the large number of infected patients from rapid community spread, which is expected. “For your safety, and to ensure the safety of our medical personnel on the front line,” the hospitals requested the following:

• We are asking you to stay at home.
• For those Island residents, only travel for the absolute necessities, such as food or prescriptions.
• If you come to the Island, you will only strain our limited resources, putting your life and others at risk.
• If you have a summer home here, we are asking you to stay at your home residence [off-Island]. We have limited bed capacity, at 25 at MVH and 14 at NCH, and that is already strained.
• We have limited medical resources here on the Island, and they are dwindling rapidly.
• We will not have enough staff to care for you or your loved ones.
• Our hospitals are virtually locked down to prevent the flow of people through the facility.
• We must act now to prevent any further spread.

Mainly for Beatles Fans, I Guess

I came across this YouTube practice session of “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”

Some might like the variation.
Others might like the dialogue at the beginning

……

John: It’s a case of half of one and two of the other. Which is it a case of, Mr. Martin?

George Martin: Take 4 was very good after the breakdown …

John: Which was Take 4?

George Martin: … And that was very good after that very end bit there, and at four it needs to get that end bit right….

John: My boys are ready to go!

Voice: John?

John: Yes?

Voice: (mumble)

John: What?

Voice: Is it possible without affecting yourselves too much to turn it down a little? Apparently there’s been a complaint . . .

John: From who?

Voice: From somebody outside the building.

John: What are they doing here at this time of night?

Voice: That guy . . .

John: What guy?

Voices:

(Crosstalk)

George(?) It’s his own fault for getting a house in such a lousy district.

John: Well, we’ll try it once more very loud, and if we don’t get it, we’ll try it quiet like, it might do it the other way. OK.
The loud one; last go. Last chance to be loud. Who says?
I can’t quite see it. I can’t see ’em, they keep merging.

Treasure Map!!!

The University of Melbourne inadvertently released this diagram showing where diamonds may be found. I’m only sharing this with loyal IMAO readers.

But beware of those giant birds. I mean, if that’s a continent, and if that’s the curve of the Earth . . .

… Oh. “Not to scale.” Ignore the giant birds, then, and go for it.

Wait! It could also mean that they are larger than depicted!

Bernie Sanders Will Participate in April Dem. Debate, Refuses to Drop Out of Presidential Race
National Review via Yahoo | 3/24/20

Senator Bernie Sanders’s (I., Vt.) presidential campaign on Tuesday announced that Sanders would participate in an April debate with former vice president Joe Biden, if it is held.

The Democratic National Committee had planned to hold a debate on an unspecified date in April, but the committee has not yet announced a site or broadcaster for the debate.

“Senator Sanders is still running for president,” Mike Casca, communications director for the Sanders campaign, told the New York Times. “If there is a debate in April, he plans to be there.”

Sanders has refused to drop out of the presidential race despite Biden’s delegate lead of 1,214-910.

Serious for a Moment

Oppo and Walrus will be by in a bit. Probably. I can’t find the keys to lock the door and they just waltz in and start typing, so…

Of course, for real, we’re located all over. I’m in Georgia, as you may know. Frank’s out in Texas (but he rarely posts anyway, so…). I don’t recall either Oppo or Walrus mentioning where they are. I know where they are, so if they mentioned it, it didn’t really register. But the point is, we’ve always done this remote.

Well, it’s not the same thing as actually having a giant building to go to and punch a time clock (especially when we’d rather be punching hippies), so this whole End Of The World VirusTM hasn’t impacted our writing much at all.

However, in the world outside of IMAO, there has been an impact. I’ve been working from home. For me, that wasn’t a big deal. I’ve been doing that a couple of days a week already, so I didn’t have much of a change. And Frank has been doing it full time for a while, so he hasn’t been impacted much either. But what about you?

Seriously, how are you doing? Has this time been a major problem and not just a slight change? Let us know.

And if you have any tips on how to survive this whole thing, someone here could probably use an idea or two.

How have you been dealing with this latest Apocalypse?
