Getting ready for the weekend with another Best Version! poll.
Last week we had Gloria and here are the results.
Congratulations to Van Morrison
Today’s song is Ghost riders in the sky.
Lots of version but here are the three we (Me and the Emu) chose.
- Marty Robbins
- Frankie Lane
- Johnny Cash
- None of the above
To the music.

The original: Vaughn Monroe
Among these, Marty Robbins’ version is my preference, but I really prefer the 20-years-earlier Sons of the Pioneers 1949 version – similar to the Robbins version in many ways, but less slick in production and packing more punch (IMO). It also has the advantage of featuring the singing of Ken Curtis (later Festus on Gunsmoke). Ken was a singer long before he was a Western stereotype – he was Frank Sinatra’s replacement in the Tommy Dorsey band years earlier…
Wow! A Festus for the rest of us! Obscury nomination.
Not a choice, but: Outlaws.
Definitely!
I did not promise anyone a rose garden.
Neither did the Emu.
“I Never Promised You a Rose Garden”
Who did it best?
a. Loretta Lynn
b. Me, in my shower
c. Hillary’s A-Team
Lynn Anderson, of course.
Check out a barbershop quartet version for a change of pace.
I like all the versions, but this one has to go to the Outlaws!
Elvis, best version, no question
