New Canadian Bill C-372 Would Ban You From Talking About Gasoline
Citizen Watch Report | 3/7/24Bill C-372 is stirring up a storm that’s leaving citizens questioning the bounds of expression. This Canadian bill, on the brink of becoming law, is raising eyebrows for taking an unconventional stance on the discussion around fossil fuels.
The crux of the matter? Bill C-372 aims to make it illegal to advertise or express anything positive about fossil fuels. Yes, you read that right – talking about gasoline and oil could land you in hot water, with potential consequences including two years of jail time and a hefty $500,000 fine.
“promotion means a representation about a product or service by any means, whether directly or indirectly, including any communication of information about the product or service and its price and distribution, that is likely to influence and shape attitudes, beliefs and behaviours about the product or service.”

“It is prohibited for a person to promote a fossil fuel or the production of a fossil fuel in a manner that states or suggests that a fossil fuel or the practices of a producer or of the fossil fuel industry would lead to positive outcomes in relation to the . . . Canadian or global economy.”
