Link of the Day: Will Mark Steyn Get Fired for This?

Considering what NRO did to Derbyshire for writing about uncomfortable (for the left) truths, this sacred-cow barbecue by Mark Steyn surely has “pink slip” written all over it.

Prior to the defenstration of Derb I would never thought of applying the word ‘craven’ to National Review. Oh well *sigh*. If you hooked WFB up to a dynamo nowadays you could power a significant portion of Manhattan.

  2. Book says:

Steyn’s article was spectacularly hilarious. Not to mention educational! I had no idea that Obama was the first male in three generations of his family to NOT be a polygamist. (OR IS HE? Someone should ask him if he’s hiding any wives somewhere.)

Derbyshire’s article was offensive, though. I’m glad he’s gone.

  3. JS says:

Hard to argue with Mr. Steyn. The current chief executive is absurd through and through. Only by holding him and his minions up to the mockery they so richly deserve will we prevail.
As to Derb, I’m so sorry to see him self-detonate, but you just can’t defend the indefensible.
The item that got him fired from NR really can’t be directly compared to what Steyn wrote.

  4. fnord says:

Whether it was offensive or not is of little import. The only important question is; was it true? Holder was right, we are too cowardly to have a discussion about race. Not that he wanted an honest discussion in the first place.

  5. Harvey says:

I saw nothing offensive about Derbyshire’s piece.

Let’s just say that I’ve spent time living in “low income housing”, and his commentary did not contradict my personal experiences.

  6. 5of7 says:

    From the offending article:
“I’m not suggesting that President Obama has eaten a human p*n*s, because, if he had, he’d almost certainly have boasted about it to the impressionable NPR ninnies who gobbled up his memoirs. But I am suggesting that Mitt Romney might like to consider it for next year’s Inauguration Day.
I jest — just in case the Secret Service are taking a break from their Colombian hookers and are minded to investigate me for a threat against what Joe Biden would call the “big stick.””

If he gets fired, he can go to work as a speech writer for Romney!

  7. Marie says:

    Oh, my, Mr. Steyn (giggle).

  8. Stephen says:

The following is from the article that got Derb fired. This isn’t about “uncomfortable (for the left) truths,” it’s naked racism. NRO did the common-sense and decent thing by firing him.

(10a) Avoid concentrations of blacks not all known to you personally.
(10b) Stay out of heavily black neighborhoods.
(10c) If planning a trip to a beach or amusement park at some date, find out whether it is likely to be swamped with blacks on that date (neglect of that one got me the closest I have ever gotten to death by gunshot).
(10d) Do not attend events likely to draw a lot of blacks.
(10e) If you are at some public event at which the number of blacks suddenly swells, leave as quickly as possible.
(10f) Do not settle in a district or municipality run by black politicians.
(10g) Before voting for a black politician, scrutinize his/her character much more carefully than you would a white.
(10h) Do not act the Good Samaritan to blacks in apparent distress, e.g., on the highway.
(10i) If accosted by a strange black in the street, smile and say something polite but keep moving.

  9. Bad Science says:

Exploding cigars, what an apt metaphor! If you’ve ever had one, you know too: they are really funny when they go off, but if you try to relight the cigar afterwards it smells like crap.

  10. Cautiously Pessimistic says:

The list you cite is not racist. It is prejudicial. And it is prejudicial based on observation and statistics. The closest Derb came to racism (in my opinion) is when talking about blacks and IQ scores. That was not racist, as he made a point to say that culture was the driving force behind that statistic, rather than race.

But then, everything is racist, isn’t it?

  11. vanderleun says:

That little inverted penis Lowry doesn’t dare do in Steyn no matter how much he’d like to. It would crater his circulation and dump his website down below the horizon forever. NR Cruises could be held in a canoe. With Derb gone, you can’t expect Lopez and the weak Jonah to hold up the tent.
