So the military is asking female soldiers to wear head scarves in Afghanistan for cultural sensitivity, I guess. So tell me: What do you call it when a woman with an assault rifle walks around a country with primitive, misogynistic beliefs and doesn’t shoot people in the face?
CULTURAL SENSITIVITY!
So if these same women then start wearing Islamic head scarves, that means maybe they’ve given up on the not face shooting culturally sensitivity. Thus people will probably be even more afraid of them.
Anyway, this just seems really wrongheaded. We’re now talking about women in combat, and if we’re sending women overseas in that role we should only be emphasizing how superior they are to all around them and how they can easily kill anyone. They can’t be getting orders like, “So take down all the hostiles… unless one of them asks you to make him a sammich, because they expect women to do that in their culture.” Some cultures have idiotic beliefs, and we have to be a little less sensitive and more willing to call them out on that. When we go into a country, we should make a nice list of what about their culture is idiotic and what we won’t respect, just so everyone is clear.
Plus, why is it on our female soldiers to be sensitive? The one with the assault rifle — now that’s who people need to worry about being sensitive to.

I think this actually a clever way for the women soldiers to include the new secret weapon head scarf/garrote in their personal arsenal. The afgahni’s would be all “hey American dog women soldier, haha, we made you bend to our will ……..gaaaaaaaaaaaaack” then he’s off to meet his 70 fat toothless virgins with a head scarf/garrote wrapped around his noodle neck.

I think we should push the American way of doing things right up to the hilt. When the Saudi women see an American female officer giving orders to her men, that has to make an impression. When the Afghans see a female American soldier with a gun, that has to make an impression. This is the path to modernization there. We have to show the savages that there is a better way.

Just to sound a discordant note, if one of those African tribes the National Geographic always pictured in my youth sent over a women’s brigade to serve alongside Americans, wouldn’t we expect them to cover their breasts? Even if their cultural custom was to paint giant eyes on them to disconcert the enemy? We are not invading Afghanistan, we are supposedly there by invitation. If we are fighting alongside someone, why wouldn’t we act all friendly-like and adopt their customs? As a founding member of SOBEB, I do know that when I send care packages to the troops, I must leave out the bacon-bits, or any other kind of pork product, for that matter. We already do conform to local customs, just not in ways that are as obvious and visible as a head scarf. And I do like the idea of a combat-scarf with garrote – keeps out the sand and the smell of goat, takes out the enemy at close quarters. Adapt and overcome!
