Nuke the News: Are We Settling for Romney Yet?

* Mitt Romney won the primary in Illinois by a decent margin and should get most of the delegates. So are we much closer to this primary finally being over? I don’t know. And yes, I am actively rooting for Romney because I just so want this primary over, and the other options aren’t good enough to justify drawing this thing out.

I honestly expected Santorum to burn out sooner like every other temporary front runner, but he keeps surprising people. He’s not going to surprise people by winning the primary, though, which is why this is all getting rather pointless.

I just want to focus on how bad Obama is? Can’t we do that soon, please?

* And now I’m moving to the phase where I try to convince myself Romney isn’t that bad. I remember doing that with McCain. It was hard.

But anyway, him telling off a whiny college student looking for free handouts is pretty nice. It would be better if he followed it up with a hippie punch.

And Obama is the candidate if you want free stuff.

TAX PAYER: “I don’t like how the deficit is over a trillions dollars.”
OBAMA: “Oh, well… have some free condoms!”

* Paul Ryan plans to take away even more free stuff with his new budget. Democrats are going to scream about it, but of course what they aren’t going to do is propose a budget of their own. You can’t run up trillion dollar deficits if you’re actually trying to stick to a budget.

And the Democrats are going to say Paul Ryan is going to end Medicare as we know it. But the Democrats are trying to completely destroy it by doing nothing when we’re headed for disaster.

Anyway, don’t know if anything useful will happen, but at least someone is trying.

* Jim Geraghty (who I like to call “Googity” because I always have to Google how to spell his name) made a good point in his Morning Jolt newsletter yesterday (which I can’t link so I’ll link Best of the Web which mentions it) about how we have to approach the attacks on Obama. If everyone is like, “He wants to destroy America!” most voters will just roll their eyes; he’s obviously not considered that extreme by most people since he was elected president. But the attack of him being naive and in over his head is much more acceptable (and also let’s those who voted for him last time save a little face). So Obama isn’t some bad guy; he’s just someone who didn’t understand he’d get his head stuck inside that bucket.

* Wisdom of the Day from Mancow Muller:

NJ was ranked as one of the 5 best states at fighting corruption. Jersey got the rank after govt officials gave researchers a huge bribe.

* In the new movie, Michael Bay is making the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles aliens. Yes, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And while he’s at it, why doesn’t he make them middle aged. And samurais. And snakes.

One thing will be for certain though with Michael Bay on board: Whether the turtles be aliens or mutants, there will be incomprehensible CGI and lots of explosions.

Anyway, let’s just mark down the fact that Michael Bay is still making movies as another one of the failures of the Obama presidency.

  1. So a Romney campaign guy said he can “reset” his positions in the general to appeal to centrists.

    Robotic Romney 2012!

Actively root for Romney all you want to. I understand why you’re doing so, but remember this: when this primary is over, I’m not about to shut up about this man’s deep, awful flaws just because the Republican Party tells me to do so.

  2. And that rather angry sounding comment isn’t directed at you, Frank, so much as its directed at this asinine party so seemingly determined to waste the best opportunity (or, crisis, if you’re a sleazeball Democrat mayor from Chicago) they’ve had in years to smash the opposition.

  3. Settling for Romney? Not a chance.
His own communications director just went on CNN and compared Romney’s positions to an Etch-a-Sketch. Once they win the nomination they PLAN on resetting them all to be more appealing to independents and liberals. He might be sounding reasonable at the moment as he panders to the base, but he has never been a conservative and never governed like a conservative. Why should we trust him to do anything except continue the Bush/Obama borrow and spend policies? Nothing but a typical slimy politician.

If we don’t support someone who represents a true alternative then we don’t deserve a true alternative.

  4. “…yes, I am actively rooting for Romney”
“And now I’m moving to the phase where I try to convince myself Romney isn’t that bad. I remember doing that with McCain. It was hard.”

So, basically, you’re actively rooting for McCain to be our candidate again…only, without Palin. Let’s think about this for a few seconds, shall we?

  5. I’m looking forward to Romney “reaching across the isle.”

But both parties will be doing it this time just to strangle one another in the Mother Of All Blame Games.

As Rand said: “The law of supply and demand is not to be conned.”

  6. @Jimmy,

Well, according to his campaign manager, first Romney will hit a “reset” button and “shake his etch-a-sketch” to start clean and run his REAL campaign where he aims to appeal to moderates…

…I wonder if Frank will be cheering him on when he does.

  7. Regardless of when the primaries finally end we’ll never be able to focus on how bad Obama is because Romney is just as terrible.
I’ve supported every Republican candidate since Nixon when I became old enough to vote, even McCain though only because of Palin. If Romney is the nominee I’m done with the GOP.

  8. Well I have know for two years that romney was going to be the R nominee. He stepped aside for mcstupid, so the establishment anointed him. The gop left me long ago, and it looks like they have no desire to get real Americans back into the fold. Apparently the majority of the people of several states think communism is a good thing. Its just some like R free stuff and others like d free stuff. and they all think someone else should pay for it. So why not vote for romney, he is just as big a commie as the pos we have now, so what is the difference? The Rs are cowards and useless, the d are marxists and losers. There is no difference between them.
Face facts as a country we are done, maybe we will writhe and flop like a fish another few years before the barbarians break the gates and Rome burns, but we are done. There is no rescue, no knight in shining armor coming over the hill, no calvary trumpets, no divine intervention. We are Rome. In a few years our people will be scattered and the history books will tell of a once great land. Sad to see that what took so long to build was destroyed in such a short time.
The Mayans were right, they just had the date wrong. But please don’t make it the french who succeed us.

  9. Obama says; “I’m a socialist and love the welfare state. Free everything for everyone! Yay!”
Romney says; “I’m better at running a welfare state.”
Conservatives say; “Where’s the guy that opposes the welfare state?”
GOP establishment says; “Support Romney or else we’ll have 4 more years of Obama! Oh No! Boo! Scary Obama!”

We don’t need candidates who are liberal enough to appeal to moderates and liberals. We need candidates who believe in conservative principles and can go out there and sell those principles. The voters are still center-right. If a candidate would just lead from there they would win in a Reagan-sized landslide.

  10. @Damncat, look what happened to us after the Germans bombed Perl Harbor; They stuck us with the Volkswagon Beetle, keef uberman, and they gave us new york in exchange for beads. What else could we possibly do wrong? Oh yeah, unicycles. Whats up with those things?

  11. Regardless of when the primaries finally end we’ll never be able to focus on how bad Obama is because Romney is just as terrible.

Really?? So Obama actually worked all his life and made hundreds of millions of dollars? Wow, I didn’t know that.
Obama donated tens of millions to charity too? Wow! Why have I never heard of this before?
Obama, being a lawyer helped a kid write his will before he died of cancer and then gave the eulogy at his funeral too? etc etc etc

Gee, maybe Obama isn’t such a scum sucking communist POS after all……..

So you go right ahead and campaign for Obama since there’s no difference and if you should find yourself on a desert island and all
there is to eat are coconuts but you don’t like coconuts, you go right ahead and stave to death too.

  12. @plentyobailouts – yeah but a lot of other stuff happened after Pearl Harbor too. Dresden, Hiroshima, moon nuking (soon). Good stuff. The sort of things that make you proud to be an American and that give us hope for a brighter future.

  13. FrankJ:

You wrote “I just want to focus on how bad Obama is? Can’t we do that soon, please?”

Well, as you know I think Obama has been a super duper awesome president.

That said, I think it is going to be hard for anyone to focus on how bad (or good) Obama is if the Romney campaign keeps on doing things like creating the perfect metaphor for its candidate’s willingness to completely change his position on anything and everything in order to appeal to his current audience — see Etch-a-Sketch quote below.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6NArPUFLRI

And the Etch-a-Sketch idea came out of the mouth of his own communications director!

I mean, you could lock David Axelrod, James Carville, Donna Brazile and Rachel Maddow in a room for 48 hours with 1/2 lb of weed, a liter of Robitussin, and gallons of coffee, and they still wouldn’t be able to come up with a more powerful and damaging symbol of Romney’s complete lack of principals and his willingness to say whatever he thinks he needs to say at that particular point to win an election.

It is so awesome! It is like the exact opposite of the “teleprompter” meme — it is actually true (Romney does say anything to get himself elected), it is simple (who does not know what a Etch-a-Sketch is?) and it is funny (Romney is like a kid’s toy!).

And because it came from Romney’s own camp, and is now being picked up by both Ricky and Newt, we know it is here to say. He can’t even run away from it!

    Best Regards,

    Monkey Faced Liberal

P.S. Really, I keep thinking Romney can’t get any worse at stepping on his own positive news. (see below). Then he does this, and surprises me once again.

    http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/03/romneys-gaffes-keep-campaign-going.php

    It really is quite impressive.

  14. I predicted in 2008 that saving America from obama and the demoncraps in Congress would take an act of divine intervention.
Since then, I’ve been looking for a sign that the miracle was about to happen.
The 2010 mid-terms and the rise of the TEA party movement was a pretty clear indicator that something that had seemed dead in America’s spirit had re-awakened.

For the last 2 years obama and his minions in congress, in the media, in academia and in Hollywood have been trying to kill it again, and the establishment Republicans, who have nearly as much to lose if this resurrected spirit succeeds have been trying to hold it back or at least control it.

As Stephen said, (just before they stoned him), “You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. AS your fathers did, so do you. Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute?” (Acts 7:51-52)

When the people of Jerusalem were given a choice between Jesus and Barabbas, they chose Barabbas because he was the one the ‘smart people’ told them to pick.
How did that work out for them?

No, Rick Santorum isn’t Jesus and Romney isn’t Barabbas, (although I’m still open to the idea that obama is the anti-well… you know) and if the United States falls into an endless decline, it won’t mess up God’s unfolding of history – heck, it may be a necessary and inevitable part of it.

But if we don’t make a clear choice now, when will we ever?

“There is no such thing as backing a winner; for he cannot be a winner when he is backed. There is no such thing as fighting on the winning side; one fights to find out which is the winning side. … A man who thinks much about success must be the drowsiest sentimentalist; for he must be always looking back. If he only likes victory he must always come late for the battle. For the man of action there is nothing but idealism.”
