I don’t get the ending. It adds nothing. They should’ve just ended after he finished the book. Anyway, I thought it was interesting enough up to that point.

I don’t get the ending. It adds nothing. They should’ve just ended after he finished the book. Anyway, I thought it was interesting enough up to that point.
The ending simply makes the point that wariness and caution cannot save you from a dangerous and unpredictable world.
That, and every other demise depicted was caused by human activity, but the possum’s fate at the end was a natural occurrence. One way it could have been set up better would have been by putting more dramatic emphasis on the dialogue just before the story reading started.
