I’m Predicting the Invention of the Perpetual Motion Machine, So We’ll Actually Be OK

The Semiconductor Industry Association has produced a study claiming that by 2040 “the energy required for computing will exceed the estimated world’s energy production.

Well, if we need more energy, we can always burn studies that demonstrate no comprehension of how supply and demand work.

  1. This reminds me for no good reason of an experience that I had at my first job after graduate school. I was working for the data processing department of the First National Bank of Chicago (motto: “If it helps the IBM sales team meet its quota, we’ll buy it.”) I was given a tour of the data center, which included the machines that read checks and translated the MICR on the checks into data that could be used to post them to the appropriate accounts. The fellow giving the tour pointed out that the bank wouldn’t be able to clear that many checks without the machines and the attached computer. I asked how many of those checks had been written by computers, making the volume that big.

I lasted one year and eight months at that job.

  2. …and 2/3 of it will be used charging Obamafones alone.

If only there was some sort of fuel that could be used to make steam to run generators that would would last for years and years and produce no evil CO2. Maybe by 2040, they’re find one.

If only there was some sort of fuel that could be used to produce steam and run generators that would last for years and not produce any evil man made CO2. Maybe by 2040 they’ll find one.
